Synopsis Academic Enhancement Tools by : Keith Bricker

Academic enhancement activities were practiced in high school for ten years and involved over fifteen hundred families. The participation rate was over 90 percent. Students in the twelve- to fifteen-year range participated with their parents. The ten activities focus on identifying natural interests, likes, and preferences the student has demonstrated from age three to the present. These activities are used to identify competencies/skills that lead the student to logical career, family, and community options. Parents provide objective advice and information to assist the student to discover their natural traits. School personnel can manage the process and give suggestions that fit the school curriculum and provide options for the future. It is the student and then the parent(s) that are the prime decision-makers with this process. The activities rely on objective information from parents, students, schools, businesses, and the communities. The process draws from each to promote student academic enhancement. Remember, schools prepare students for success in each of these areas. It is reasonable that direction should come from outside and within the educational community for student planning and school curriculum changes. Parents are the prime resource because they know the student well and work in these areas of the community.

Synopsis Improvement Science as a Tool for School Enhancement by : Susan P. Carlile

A 2023 SPE Outstanding Book Honorable Mention Improvement Science as a Tool for School Enhancement: Solutions for Better Educational Outcomes is a collection of equity-focused improvement science-in-action, school-based case studies led by practitioners. Chapter authors tell us how and why improvement science principles make system-wide improvements in classroom practice, how they learned from the problems encountered and, further, how they were then able to make changes within a school or district. A core principle of improvement science is variability in context (what works for whom and under what conditions)--a critical concept for improvement in each of the case studies. Each team analyzed their problem of practice from the perspective of the unique conditions in their context, considering what might work, and what might not work, and when the changes could be expanded for implementation school- or district-wide. Early chapters describe the actions of school personnel to embed social and emotional learning as well as how to serve historically underserved students during disasters. Trauma-informed and restorative practices embraced by all staff enhanced student outcomes and reduced educational disparities in classrooms and throughout the school. The content then explores how improvement science change processes improve chronic absenteeism and discipline issues through whole-school practices related to school climate. Centering student and family perception, developing representative systems, and facilitating collaborative improvement projects were found to measurably improve the experience of students, increase equity, reinforce democratic principles, and empower school stakeholders, especially those whose voices have historically been ignored, to create meaningful system-wide school improvement. Finally, the material in the book provides concrete examples of improvement science as it applies in real-setting to address high school advisories, graduation rates, services for multi-lingual learners, students with disabilities, and reading clubs. Each chapter has an equity focus. The editors and contributors provide examples of how to use the processes and tools of improvement science to increase equity system-wide. How to use improvement science to address educational disparities system-wide with urgency, commitment, and a belief in the success of every child, of every race, every ethnicity, gender, ability, and cultural identity, is the essence of this book. Synopsis Tools for Improving Corequisite Models by : Lindsay Daugherty

In education, practitioners are increasingly looking for strategies to bring data and evidence into decisionmaking and to roll out programs in intentional ways that allow for ongoing improvement. This toolkit acts as a guide to improvement strategies for teams of practitioners at colleges, providing them with the knowledge and tools they need to carry out rapid cycles of data-driven improvement. Topics discussed include identifying a problem of practice and objectives for improvement, carrying out Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles, and conducting rapid-cycle evaluation. The toolkit includes tools and tips for practitioners, with a supplement of seven worksheets that colleges can use for planning improvement efforts. The toolkit applies improvement approaches to corequisite remediation, a common initiative being adopted by colleges. Corequisite remediation shifts the way that students are supported in college by allowing them to directly enter a college-level course and receive additional academic support during that same semester to address the challenges they face with basic math, reading, or writing concepts (rather than requiring students to complete a series of developmental education courses). This toolkit was developed for improvement teams made up of administrators, department and faculty chairs, and other college staff who are helping to oversee important initiatives and programs, such as corequisite remediation, and who are looking to build an ongoing process for addressing challenges they face and improving the way that corequisite models are provided through data use and reflection.
