Synopsis Ac-Au by : Rudolf Warncke

The extraordinary quantity of material included in the Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry can make it extremely difficult to find a specific compound using only a general un derstanding of the basic rules for the arrangement of the subject matter (the so-called "System ofthe Last Position"). Consequently, subject indexes have been provided for the past few years to individual Handbook volumes, covering only a single section, or in some cases, a complete system number. During this period a comprehensive subject index-the Gmelin Index-was being prepared, whose first volume is now available. The broad distribution and extensive utilization enjoyed by the Gmelin Handbook in Eng lish-speaking countries has led to a decision to publish the Gmelin Index in the English lan guage. This decision was partly based on the fact that since the English language today oc cupies a preeminent position in the field of chemistry, a German-speaking user could utilize an English text much more readily than would be the case for an English-speaking user and a German text.

Synopsis Australian Languages by : Claire Bowern

This book addresses controversial issues in the application of the comparative method to the languages of Australia which have recently come to international prominence. Are these languages ‘different’ in ways that challenge the fundamental assumptions of historical linguistics? Can subgrouping be successfully undertaken using the Comparative Method? Is the genetic construct of a far-flung ‘Pama-Nyungan’ language family supportable by classic methods of reconstruction? Contrary to increasingly established views of the Australian scene, this book makes a major contribution to the demonstration that traditional methods can indeed be applied to these languages. These studies, introduced by chapters on subgrouping methodology and the history of Australian linguistic classification, rigorously apply the comparative method to establishing subgroups among Australian languages and justifying the phonology of Proto-Pama-Nyungan. Individual chapters can profitably be read either for their contribution to Australian linguistic prehistory or as case studies in the application of the comparative method.

Synopsis Land Use in Australia by : Richard Thackway

Land Use in Australia: Past, Present and Future, is a compilation of invited chapters from Australia’s leading specialists in land use policy and planning and land management. Chapters present many widely recognised issues involved in Australia’s land use policy and planning, including limited understanding and poor awareness of: the rich history of poor decisions on land use planning and management across different levels of governmentthe discontinuities between providers of national biophysical informationthe tools, data and information to improve national land use decision-making outcomesthe poor synthesis and integration between science to policy to natural resource management and resource conditionthe benefits of land use practitioners engaging in connection, cooperation, mutual inquiry and collective social learnings. The aims of the book are threefold: 1) provide a review of the current status of land use policy and planning in Australia; 2) provide a resource to inform and influence the development of land use policy and planning; and 3) provide a sound contribution to Australia’s public–private land use debates in the future. The audience for the book includes government and non-government land management agencies from state and national bodies, universities and researchers.
