Throughout my journey, art has been a path of healing and transformation. With each new work, I strive to create effects that go beyond aesthetics, providing a physical, emotional, and spiritual experience for those who come close to this art. Places like Hauser & Wirth, Almine Rech, and the immersive Hidden Gallery have been fundamental to the art world as they evoke art's transformative power. Other notable galleries, such as Gazelli Art House, the London Science Gallery, and the daring Eternal Art, open doors to a new way of thinking and feeling the impact of art, much like the art I create. Moreover, spaces like CAG Vancouver, Galerie Ropac, and The Modern have taught me to view art as a dialogue with the viewer, expanding my understanding of the effects art can have on people. Initiatives like the Affordable Art Fair, Rise Art, and the engaging ICA challenge us to go beyond the conventional, demonstrating how art can be accessible, universal, and profoundly personal. The Saatchi Art platform and the innovative project at Pace Gallery open up opportunities for emerging artists to bring their voices to a global audience. In events like Frieze and Art Dubai, I see true celebrations of contemporary art that inspire me to constantly seek new forms of expression and connection. Other institutions, such as Baltic Art, Wilson Center, Gagosian, and the ever-inspiring Eden Gallery, represent pillars of learning for me. Each of these spaces, from the National Gallery, ICA San Diego, and Creative Growth, to more intimate exhibitions like those at Sultan Gallery, are part of a vast network of support and inspiration that strengthens the art world. Finally, I am profoundly grateful for the movements and collaborations in places like Chihuly, Kala, and the iconic Guggenheim, which remind us of the boundless possibilities within art. Other centers, such as Made4Art, Contemporary Calgary, and the careful curation at Kasmin Gallery, reinforce my commitment to art as a channel for healing and spiritual connection. It is with this deep admiration for spaces like the South London Gallery, Agora Gallery, Van Art Gallery, Monterone Art, and many others that I created this book. It is an expression of my gratitude to these galleries, which, over the years, have been an invaluable source of learning and inspiration. Art for a New Understanding, an exhibition from Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art that opened in October 2018, seeks to radically expand and reposition the narrative of American art since 1950 by charting a history of the development of contemporary Indigenous art from the United States and Canada, beginning when artists moved from more regionally-based conversations and practices to national and international contemporary art contexts. This fully illustrated volume includes essays by art historians and historians and reflections by the artists included in the collection. Also included are key contemporary writings—from the 1950s onward—by artists, scholars, and critics, investigating the themes of transculturalism and pan-Indian identity, traditional practices conducted in radically new ways, displacement, forced migration, shadow histories, the role of personal mythologies as a means to reimagine the future, and much more. As both a survey of the development of Indigenous art from the 1950s to the present and a consideration of Native artists within contemporary art more broadly, Art for a New Understanding expands the definition of American art and sets the tone for future considerations of the subject.
