Synopsis William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! by : Fred Hobson
Absalom, Absalom! has long been seen as one of William Faulkner's supreme creations, as well as one of the leading American novels of the twentieth century. In this collection Fred Hobson has brought together eight of the most stimulating essays on Absalom, essays written over a thirty-year span which approach the novel both formally and historically. Here are critical responses by Cleanth Brooks, John Irwin, Thadious Davis, and Eric Sundquist, as well as four essays published in the last decade. The casebook concludes with Faulkner's own remarks on the novel, delivered in a discussion with students at the University of Virginia. What emerges from all the selections is a rich and suggestive treatment of a work which Faulkner himself called "the best novel yet written by an American" and a less biased critic has called "the greatest American novel of the century... joining Moby-Dick and Huckleberry Finn at the pinnacle of American fiction."

Synopsis The Rebellion of Absalom by : Keith Bodner
With extraordinary range and literary energy, the story of Absalom’s rebellion in 2 Samuel ranks as the most elaborate and extensively narrated internal political event in the Hebrew Bible, complete with a host of scandalous and sordid events: illicit sex, murder, cover-up, petty crime, to name a few. For many students approaching the historical books of the Bible, however, texts often fail to address the vitality of this most turbulent period of King David’s career. Bodner addresses this shortcoming with his The Rebellion of Absalom, a lively analysis of the early monarchy of Israel, written by a recognized commentator of the Bible’s historical books. Concise and insightful, each chapter incrementally focuses on the stages of David’s rise to power and Absalom’s early life and rebellion. Crucial issues in the development of Israel’s monarchy are embedded in this story, including: royal legitimation divine election succession usurpation divine and human punishment. The Rebellion of Absalom is a student-friendly, culturally savvy approach to one of the most important episodes in deciding how the kings of Israel would be determined throughout the monarchic period.

Synopsis Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary: Definitions of Ancient Hebrew Names Mentioned in Biblical Lore by : Roswell D. Hitchcock
Hitchcock's compendium of Bible names and their definitions demystifies the meanings of every Bible name from A to Z - thus, it is a superb reference manual for spiritual study. A good supplement to Biblical studies, Hitchcock's book lists the meanings behind the various names. This allows readers to discover the etymological origins of the most famous figures in the Bible, place these names in their proper context, and thus perform readings of the holy scripture from a more informed perspective. Many of the names pertain directly to the qualities of their holders. For example the name Behemoth from the Book of Job simply means 'monstrous', while the name 'Iscariot' (as in Judas Iscariot) means 'a man of murder; a hireling'. Other names are however more nuanced - the name 'Baal' means 'master, or lord', contrasting the demonic connotations applied by 17th century Gothic fiction.

Synopsis The Book of the Dead by : Muriel Rukeyser
Written in response to the Hawk's Nest Tunnel disaster of 1931 in Gauley Bridge, West Virginia, The Book of the Dead is an important part of West Virginia's cultural heritage and a powerful account of one of the worst industrial catastrophes in American history. The poems collected here investigate the roots of a tragedy that killed hundreds of workers, most of them African American. They are a rare engagement with the overlap between race and environment in Appalachia. Published for the first time alongside photographs by Nancy Naumburg, who accompanied Rukeyser to Gauley Bridge in 1936, this edition of The Book of the Dead includes an introduction by Catherine Venable Moore, whose writing on the topic has been anthologized in Best American Essays.

Luray, Virginia, is a beautiful town situated in Page Valley of the Shenandoah. It’s home to Daniel and Annabelle Greenwood. Three boys: Absalom, Noah, and Tommy. A little girl named Layla Belle who was in their lives for only a moment in time but made a huge impact for the Kingdom of God. Daniel also serves as minister to a small Presbyterian congregation that has roots in the basement of his home. One morning on Christmas day, the congregation experience a miraculous healing from the Holy Spirit, which catapults growth and positive directions in serving the community of Luray, for years to come. Absalom Greenwood catches a vision for serving the Lord early on in his life following the patterns of his mom and dad! Serving in a ministry that’s very entertaining, to say the least. At the age of eighteen, walking away from his faith, Absalom becomes a statistic, joining the 85 percent of his companions raised in Christian homes who never give the Bible or God a second thought. They work hard pursuing the American Dream and worshipping everything but the Lord. Many years later, when Annabelle is seventy-seven years of age, she rises to her finest hour, calling out to her son, pleading for him to return to his faith. Will Absalom hear the call and make the decision to turn his life toward God? The story spans from the early 1960s all the way to 2009, with many interesting people to meet along the way. You may see yourself along the journey. So I ask that you examine your hearts and minds. Confirm your calling and election sure for Christ. He loves you! 2 36
