Synopsis WHO guidance on research methods for health emergency and disaster risk management, revised 2022 by : World Health Organization

The WHO website has an introductory description for the Guidance. It states that the WHO Guidance on Research Methods for Health Emergency and Disaster Risk Management (Health EDRM) was developed to address the need to promote high quality research methods to those who commission and conduct research on Health EDRM. The intended audience includes decision makers, practitioners, and community actors who need for evidence-based policy and practice to implement the Health EDRM Framework, Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the International Health Regulations (2005), the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other relevant global, regional and national frameworks. Chapters have been written by more than 100 international authors with practical experience and expertise in a wide range of areas including research, practice and policy making. The unique collection of chapters provides straightforward and practical guidance on how to plan, conduct and report a wide variety of studies that can answer quantitative and qualitative questions in different emergency settings. Case studies of direct relevance to Health EDRM provide real-life examples of research to illustrate the methods and their impact. The book was revised in 2022 with an additional chapter on how to use this book in the context of COVID-19 pandemic.

Synopsis Priorities for research on hypertension care delivery by : World Health Organization

Hypertension (HTN) is a major global public health problem. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide. Hypertension, which affects about 1.3 billion adults, is a major risk factor for many CVDs. Uncontrolled hypertension can lead to various adverse clinical conditions such as myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure and kidney failure. Despite the availability of cost-effective interventions for hypertension treatment, only one in five people with hypertension has it under control. As part of ongoing initiatives for countries to strengthen universal health care, the World Health Organization (WHO), together with ministries of health and other partners, has demonstrated the feasibility of using hypertension programmes in primary care as a pathfinder for universal health coverage. Improving service delivery for noncommunicable diseases is part of the WHO Thirteenth General Programme of Work and contributes to WHO’s Triple Billion Goal of having a billion more people with universal health coverage.

Synopsis Decade of healthy ageing by : World Health Organization

The Decade of Healthy Ageing 2021-2030 will focus on four key actions: changing how we think, feel and act towards age and ageing; developing communities in ways that foster the abilities of older people; delivering integrated care and primary health services that are responsive to the needs of older people; and providing older people who need it with access to long-term care. All are critical for building back better, and for fostering healthy ageing. The Baseline Report for the Decade of Healthy Ageing 2021−2030 addresses five issues so that policy-makers and others in government, the private sector, civil society and research are committed to implementing actions to achieve the ambitious goals set out in the Decade: 1. Introduces Healthy Ageing, the Decade’s actions and enablers, and a pathway to accelerate impact by 2030. 2. Where are we in 2020? The report provides a first-time baseline for healthy ageing worldwide. 3. What improvements could we expect by 2030? It documents progress and scenarios for improvement. 4. How can we accelerate impact on the lives of older people? It shows how older people and stakeholders can together optimize functional ability. 5. The next steps including opportunities to boost collaboration and impact by 2023, the next reporting period.

Synopsis Implementation of the global strategy and plan of action on public health, innovation and intellectual property by : World Health Organization

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development recognizes the need for research and development into and access to affordable essential medicines and vaccines for the communicable and noncommunicable diseases that primarily affect developing countries. Target 3.b is to support research and development of vaccines and medicines for the communicable and noncommunicable diseases that primarily affect developing countries, provide access to affordable essential medicines and vaccines, in accordance with the Doha Declaration on the TRIPS Agreement and Public Health, which affirms the right of developing countries to use to the full the provisions in the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights regarding flexibilities to protect public health, and, in particular, provide access to medicines for all. The aim of the Global Strategy and Plan of Action on Public Health, Innovation and Intellectual Property (GSPA-PHI), adopted in 2008 (2), is to promote new thinking on innovation and access to medicines and to secure an enhanced and sustainable basis for needs-driven essential health research and development relevant to diseases that disproportionately affect developing countries.
