Synopsis Imago by : Octavia E. Butler

From the award-winning author of Parable of the Sower:After the near-extinction of humanity, a new kind of alien-human hybrid must come to terms with their identity -- before their powers destroy what is left of humankind. Since a nuclear war decimated the human population, the remaining humans began to rebuild their future by interbreeding with an alien race -- the Oankali -- who saved them from near-certain extinction. The Oankalis' greatest skill lies in the species' ability to constantly adapt and evolve, a process that is guided by their third sex, the ooloi, who are able to read and mutate genetic code. Now, for the first time in the humans' relationship with the Oankali, a human mother has given birth to an ooloi child: Jodahs. Throughout his childhood, Jodahs seemed to be a male human-alien hybrid. But when he reaches adolescence, Jodahs develops the ooloi abilities to shapeshift, manipulate DNA, cure and create disease, and more. Frightened and isolated, Jodahs must either come to terms with this new identity, learn to control new powers, and unite what's left of humankind -- or become the biggest threat to their survival.

Synopsis Hermetic Philosophy and Alchemy by : M.A. Atwood

This is a reprint of the 1920 edition of an important but almost unknown work. When Atwood made her suggestive inquiry into what was termed "The Hermetic Mystery," she supposed that the adept Hieophants put the candidate into a deep trance and his soul was led into something that was for her the Supreme Oneness of everything.

Synopsis A Suggestive Inquiry Into the Hermetic Mystery by : Mary Anne Atwood

Excerpt from A Suggestive Inquiry Into the Hermetic Mystery: With a Dissertation on the More Celebrated of the Alchemical Philosophers Being an Attempt Towards the Recovery of the Ancient Experiement of Nature This is the re-issue of a book with a strange history; a book moreover not only entirely unknown, for reasons that will presently appear, to all but the meagrest minority, but one treating of a subject hitherto excluded from consideration by exponents of conventional learning. Whether even now men devoted professionally or otherwise to philosophy, divinity or science will give it the least attention is problematical. Be that as it may, it is believed that among those to whom the book and its subject-matter will be new there will be not a few who will accord it at least an interested and respectful notice, whilst many others who are already aware of the book's existence and the general tenor of its theme will welcome its re-issue and the fact that after nearly seventy years of suppression it now becomes generally accessible. In the interests of the book itself, and for the information of those whom it will now reach, it is desirable that something should be said of its authorship and previous history, the reasons for its suppression and its reappearance, and lastly of the subject of which it treats. The Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery was originally published anonymously in 1850 by the London house of Trelawney Saunders. It was the work of a comparatively young woman named Mary Anne South, who later, by marriage, became Mrs. Mary Anne Atwood. Synopsis A Suggestive Inquiry Into the Hermetic Mystery by : Mary Anne Atwood

Mary Anne Atwood was a hermetist and a believer in spiritual alchemy. She believed that all parts of our universe were one, watched over by a deity, and that the alteration of the fundamental state of an object's being was possible by spiritual enlightenment. After a childhood heavily influenced by her father, a researcher into spiritualism, Mary was always interested in the possibility of an alternative spirituality and a realm beyond the tangible. This work is her attempt to transmit her beliefs to the world. Mary published A Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery in 1850, originally with her father's support and permission, her second work in the field. Mr. South financed the anonymous publication of the book but sadly without ever reading a full draft of her manuscript. Once he read the book upon publication he was immediately seized with powerful anxiety and attempted to buy back every copy, with the aim of burning every one to protect the secrets inside. Nearly every copy was lost due to his efforts. Thomas South is said to have believed so fervently that this text was dangerous that he ceased work on his own poetry in response to it, wary of disturbing the spiritual unknowns in all our minds. Despite the few copies that survived Mr South's purge, this text is now available to us to read. No doubt the reader would be advised to tread lightly in the practice of spiritual alchemy as 'finding the Sophia in the mind' would even in the author's opinion be a difficult task. Synopsis A Suggestive Inquiry Into the Hermetic Mystery by : Mary Anne Atwood

Mary Anne Atwood's famous investigation of Hermeticism delves into the Ancient Greek origins of the teachings, and goes on to examine numerous sources from across the ages. First appearing in 1850, Atwood's lengthy studies of the Hermetic philosophers and alchemists of ages past spurred much interest. Every chapter contains numerous annotations and source citations, while ancient poetic verses and instructions left by far-gone practitioners are quoted at length. The author casts her net wide, examining the mythology and literature of Ancient Greece and Rome, various Medieval and Renaissance-era writings on chemistry and medicine, plus the surviving works of an eclectic yet pertinent range of scholars. Atwood successfully collated and organized a great many disparate accounts of Hermeticism and alchemical practice, her knowledge of Latin and Greek proving useful for the arduous task. Knowledge and insights previously obscure were now available in a united, comprehensive treatment - interest burgeoned, yet A Suggestive Inquiry was soon out of print. The author opted to live a secluded life, and refused to allow further printings of her masterwork. Following Atwood's death in 1910, a new edition was finally released, inclusive of slight revisions and corrections.
