Synopsis A Student's Manual of a Laboratory Course in Physical Measurements (Classic Reprint) by : Wallace Clement Sabine

Excerpt from A Student's Manual of a Laboratory Course in Physical Measurements This manual was primarily written for use in the course in Harvard College known as "Physics C," and the experiments here detailed are baaed upon those performed in that course. The same course is given in the Summer School of Harvard University, beginning usually the first week in July and continuing six weeks, attended mainly by teachers. As given in college it requires 180 hours spent in the laboratory, and the student is held accountable for 90 hours of outside study. A knowledge of algebra and plane geometry, and a slight acquaintance with the notation of trigonometry is necessary. It should properly be preceded also by a more elementary course in physics, either by laboratory or text-book, preferably the former. For this purpose is recommended the quantitative course outlined in A d104-Book of Physics, Hall Bergen, Holt & Co., New York. This course has for some time been in use most successfully as the laboratory alternative of the elementary physics required for admission to Harvard College. The course outlined in the following pages is designed to immediately follow this in college and to fit for the more advanced courses. It corresponds also to what is known as the advanced admission requirements in physics. This manual, intended for students use, has been given the form of an abstract of the daily lectures preceding the laboratory work and describing the experiments to be performed. It is intentionally condensed. A more extended treatment would render the book unwieldy and inconvenient for ready reference, and would perhaps allow the laboratory work to be a thoughtless following of too complete directions. Synopsis A Manual of Physical Measurements by : Anthony Zeleny

Excerpt from A Manual of Physical Measurements This manual is an outline of the laboratory experiments given in the one-year and the two-year courses in general Physics at the University of Minnesota. The laboratory work, in these courses, supplements the lectures and recitations, and occupies one two-hour period a week for two and four semesters respectively. The experiments given in a junior course of one semester in electrical measurements are also included in the section on electricity. It is taken for granted that the student has acquired a general knowledge of a subject before it is considered in the laboratory and no attempt is made in the manual at completeness in subject-matter or in explanations. The work is done under the guidance of an instructor who furnishes any additional information necessary. The student should feel that acceptable results depend upon his own ability to properly adjust the apparatus, and he alone should plan and execute the details of the experiments, subject of course to the criticism of the instructor. We here wish to thank Prof. J. Zeleny and Mr. Paul E. Klopsteg for valuable suggestions, criticisms, and assistance during the preparation of this manual. Synopsis Physical Measurements, Vol. 1 by : Ralph S. Minor

Excerpt from Physical Measurements, Vol. 1: A Laboratory Manual in General Physics for Colleges This manual presents the laboratory exercises of the Courses in General Physics offered at the University of California. It is printed in four parts, each part accompanied by appropriate tables. Parts I and II contain experiments on Heat, Properties of Matter, and Mechanics. Part III deals with Magnetism and Electricity, and Part IV is devoted to Sound and Light. While the manual is largely based upon the exercises printed in Physical Measurements in Properties of Matter and Heat-Minor and Elston, and Physical Measurements in Sound, Light and Electricity-Minor, it represents a revision in which the writer has attempted two things. First, to base the college laboratory work squarely upon the foundation afforded by a first course, and second, to omit exercises based upon topics which properly belong to the lecture demonstration and which experience has shown to be adequately treated there. The writer's predecessors, Professor Harold Whiting. Professor E. R. Drew, Professor Elmer E. Hall, Dr. T Sidney Elston, A. C. Alexander, G. K. Burgess, Brucc V. Hill, A. S. King, and T. C. McKay have all influenced the development of these exercises. Material has been freely drawn from the literature of the subject whether in magazine or text book form without specific credit being always indicated.
