Synopsis A Register of the Members of St. Mary Magdalen College, Oxford, From the Foundation of the College, Vol. 2 by : William Dunn Macray
Excerpt from A Register of the Members of St. Mary Magdalen College, Oxford, From the Foundation of the College, Vol. 2: Fellows; 1522-1575 The mode of election to vacant Fellowships followed throughout the sixteenth century, and which prevailed even into the seventeenth, was without regard to the actual county vacant, if only the person elected was a native of any one of the counties provided for by the Founder. Thus, a native of Wilts would be elected, say, for Sussex, and then would be transferred to his own county when opportunity allowed. This was even done with respect to the special Yorkshire foundation, although rightly regarded by some as a scandal, and it was con sequently included in the charges brought against Humphrey.
