Synopsis A Quiet Woman in a Quiet House by : Lola Latreille
A collection of poems written by a woman born in 1930. She has seen many changes in her lifetime and often makes comments about contemporary life. Of course, she is opinionated but feels that if you have reached this age and do not have opinions, what in the world have you been thinking about? The author has noticed that although children who grew up in the Depression era were living in desperately hard times, they often have fond memories of their old neighborhoods and those times. She has concluded that the good old days are any old days when we were young and lived in childhoods neighborhood. Their parents were the ones who experienced the hardships. Most of the poems have been published in Vintage Views which is the newspaper published by the Older Persons Commission of Rochester, Michigan, which is a city near the authors home. It is widely distributed in the city and she feels fortunate to be on the staff.

Synopsis Quiet Girl in a Noisy World by : Debbie Tung
This illustrated gift book of short comics illuminates author Debbie Tung's experience as an introvert in an extrovert’s world. Presented in a loose narrative style that can be read front to back or dipped into at one’s leisure, the book spans three years of Debbie's life, from the end of college to the present day. In these early years of adulthood, Debbie slowly but finally discovers there is a name for her lifelong need to be alone: she’s an introvert. The first half of the book traces Debbie’s final year in college: socializing with peers, dating, falling in love (with an extrovert!), moving in, getting married, meeting new people, and simply trying to fit in. The second half looks at her life after graduation: finding a job, learning to live with her new husband, trying to understand social obligations when it comes to the in-laws, and navigating office life. Ultimately, Quiet Girl sends a positive, pro-introvert message: our heroine learns to embrace her introversion and finds ways to thrive in the world while fulfilling her need for quiet.

'One of the most lovely and heartwarming books I have ever read! 5 STARS' - Between the Pages Lancashire, 1930. Leah Turner's father has been killed in an accident at the laundry, and since her mother died years ago it falls to her to become sole provider for her little sister. But women's wages are half those of men and pawning the few belongings she has left will only keep their vicious rent collector at bay for a few weeks, so even if she finds a job, they'll lose their home. Out of the blue Charlie Willcox, the local pawnbroker, offers her a deal. His brother Jonah, an invalid since being gassed in the Great War, needs a wife. Charlie thinks Leah would be perfect for the job. The idea of a marriage of convenience doesn't please Leah, but she finds Jonah agreeable enough and moving with him to the pretty hamlet of Ellindale may be the only chance of a better life for her sister. But other people have plans for the remote Pennine valley, and the two sisters find themselves facing danger in their new life with Jonah. Can the three of them ever look to a brighter future? Synopsis An Unnecessary Woman by : Rabih Alameddine
A happily misanthropic Middle East divorcee finds refuge in books in a “beautiful and absorbing” novel of late-life crisis (The New York Times). Aaliya is a divorced, childless, and reclusively cranky translator in Beirut nurturing doubts about her latest project: a 900-page avant-garde, linguistically serpentine historiography by a late Chilean existentialist. Honestly, at seventy-two, should she be taking on such a project? Not that Aailiya fears dying. Women in her family live long; her mother is still going crazy. But on this lonely day, hour-by-hour, Aaliya’s musings on literature, philosophy, her career, and her aging body, are suddenly invaded by memories of her volatile past. As she tries in vain to ward off these emotional upwellings, Aaliya is faced with an unthinkable disaster that threatens to shatter the little life she has left. In this “meditation on, among other things, aging, politics, literature, loneliness, grief and resilience” (The New York Times), Alameddine conjures “a beguiling narrator . . . who is, like her city, hard to read, hard to take, hard to know and, ultimately, passionately complex” (San Francisco Chronicle). A finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the National Book Award, An Unnecessary Woman is “a fun, and often funny . . . grave, powerful . . . [and] extraordinary” Washington Independent Review of Books) ode to literature and its power to define who we are. “Read it once, read it twice, read other books for a decade or so, and then pick it up and read it anew. This one’s a keeper” (The Independent)

Synopsis Charlotte and the Quiet Place by : Deborah Sosin
This charming picture book teaches kids ages 2-9 about using self-regulation techniques like mindful breathing to find peace in our noisy, over-stimulating world. “Wholesome enjoyment for kids and adults alike.” —Sharon Salzberg, author of Real Happiness Charlotte likes quiet. But wherever Charlotte goes, she is surrounded by noise, noise, noise—her yipping dog, Otto; the squeaky, creaky swings; the warbling, wailing sirens. Even in the library, children yammer and yell. Where can Charlotte find a quiet place? Sara Woolley’s magnificent watercolors bring Charlotte’s city to life when Otto leads her on a wild chase through the park. There, Charlotte discovers a quiet place where she never would have imagined! Sometimes children need a break from our noisy, over-stimulating world. Charlotte and the Quiet Place shows how a child learns and practices mindful breathing on her own and experiences the beauty of silence. All children will relate to the unfolding adventure and message of self-discovery and empowerment. Parents, teachers, and caretakers of highly active or sensitive children will find this story especially useful. “ . . . fits perfectly with my Zones of Regulation lessons.” —Books that Heal Kids

Synopsis Quiet Houses by : Simon Kurt Unsworth
Nakata's ghosts won't stay dead... A chambermaid's seemingly innocent request is granted, an act of kindness that has dire consequences for a guest... An unearthly light in an abandoned bungalow resolves the mystery of a missing child... An invitation to a clifftop graveyard leads to a harrowing chase by things that remain unseen... In an abandoned hotel, work is underway to upgrade the building but something is stalking the residents... There is a hidden agenda to paranormal researcher Richard Nakata's investigations into these houses. A commission that witnesses cattle lowing in the cow-sheds of Stack's Farm long after they've been slaughtered, and a reckoning in the showhouse of 24 Glasshouse as he and his colleagues pay the price for creating their own ghost... Simon Kurt Unsworth reinvents the classic English ghost story with a portmanteau collection that takes the haunted house genre and makes it scream... quietly. The houses are quiet, it's the residents who are screaming.
