Synopsis A Players Almanac by : John R. Camera
The Players is a private social club founded in 1888 by Edwin Booth, the greatest and most celebrated American actor of his time. Membership today continues to be composed of actors and artists from the stage but now from the kindred professions of film and television, the fine and plastic arts, theatre history and education and those from other professions interested in the celebration and promotion of the arts. A Players Almanac comprises five Acts, the first with the history and growth of Gramercy Park in 1833 and the mansions built by the famous residents that surround it; the second focuses on the northward movement of commerce and theatre in the 1800s from lower Manhattan to Union Square and New Yorks famed Ladies Mile; the third on the early life of Booth as a touring star in 1849 with notes on Edwins first marriage, his most influential friends and the design of the first Booth Theatre; the fourth on the founding of The Players in 1888 and Stanford Whites design of The Players clubhouse; and the fifth act on the growing ill health and consequent death of Edwin Booth in 1893. Each Act has an extensive gallery that displays, in sequence, photos of Gramercy Park, early theatres in Union Square, the fashions and the buildings that housed the designs and styles created by the most prominent couturiers of the 19th century, of the Booth family, photolithographs of Edwin dressed in the costume of his most recognized characters and the early and later interiors of The Players. The Almanac concludes with an Addendum and a bibliography.

Synopsis Not Playing the Game by : Xavier Fowler
War remembrance and sport have become increasingly entwined in Australia, with AFL and NRL Anzac Day fixtures attracting larger crowds than dawn services. National representative teams travel halfway around the world to visit battle sites etched in military folklore. To validate their integration into this culturally sacred occasion, promoters point to the special role of sport in the development of the Anzac legend, and with it, the birth of the nation. The air of sombre reflection that surrounds each Anzac Day is accompanied by a celebratory nationalism that sport and war supposedly embody. But what exactly is being remembered, and indeed forgotten, in these official commemorations and tributes? In Not Playing the Game, Xavier Fowler reveals that the place of sport in the Great War was highly contested. Civilian patriots and public officials complained that spectator sport distracted young men from enlisting and wasted public finances better spent elsewhere. Sport’s defenders argued it was a necessary escape for a population weary of the pressures of war. These competing views often reflected differences of class, politics and ethnicity, and resulted in ferocious, sometimes violent, clashes. Not Playing the Game challenges the way our memories of the war are influenced by the fervour of sport, painting a picture not of triumph but immense turmoil and tragedy.

Synopsis Summerland by : Michael Chabon
From the Pulitzer Prize winning Michael Chabon comes this bestselling novel for readers of all ages that blends fantasy and folklore with that most American coming-of-age ritual: baseball—now in a new edition, with an original introduction by the author. Ethan Feld is having a terrible summer: his father has moved them to Clam Island, Washington, where Ethan has quickly established himself as the least gifted baseball player the island has ever seen. Ethan’s luck begins to change, however, when a mysterious baseball scout named Ringfinger Brown and a seven-hundred-and-sixty-five-year-old werefox enter his life, dragging Ethan into another world called the Summerlands. But this beautiful, winter-less place is facing destruction at the hands of the villainous Coyote, and it has been prophesized that only Ethan can save it. In this cherished modern classic, the New York Times bestselling, Pulitzer Prize winning author brings his masterful storytelling, dexterous plotting, and singularly envisioned characters to a coming-of-age novel for readers of all ages.
