Synopsis Understanding Basic Music Theory by : Catherine Schmidt-Jones
The main purpose of the book is to explore basic music theory so thoroughly that the interested student will then be able to easily pick up whatever further theory is wanted. Music history and the physics of sound are included to the extent that they shed light on music theory. The main premise of this course is that a better understanding of where the basics come from will lead to better and faster comprehension of more complex ideas. It also helps to remember, however, that music theory is a bit like grammar. Catherine Schmidt-Hones is a music teacher from Champaign, Illinois and she has been a pioneer in open education since 2004. She is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Illinois in the Open Online Education program with a focus in Curriculum and Instruction.

Synopsis A Note in Music by : Rosamond Lehmann
A seductive new stranger becomes the symbol of everything two married women secretly long for in this richly imagined novel by one of the most distinguished writers of the twentieth century Thirty-four-year-old Grace Fairfax lives a dull, conventional existence with her dull, conventional husband, Tom, in a dreary manufacturing town in the North of England. A year ago, when a fortune-teller told her that her life lacked will and purpose, she wasn’t surprised. Every day the same predictable routine—it’s a wonder she doesn’t go mad. Then Hugh Miller and his sister, Clare, descend on the town. Clare is young and beautiful. Hugh seems to possess everything lacking in Grace’s life: passion, vitality, and most important, the freedom to do as he pleases. Grace’s best friend, Norah MacKay, isn’t immune to the handsome stranger’s charms, either. Married to Gerald, a curmudgeonly university professor, the mother of two has her own fantasies of desire and liberation. But Hugh isn’t the man Grace and Norah imagine him to be. In this story of two strangers who cast an otherworldly enchantment on an entire town and its inhabitants, A Note in Music presents an intensely moving portrait of marriage—its disappointments, joys, jealousies, fears, and loneliness, and the truths that remain unspoken.

Synopsis None So Pretty by : Margaret Irwin
None So Pretty describes, with a sensibility and conviction unusual in historical fiction, the life of a young girl brought up in a large, aristocratic, but impecunious family, and married off at an early age to a neighbouring squire who nightly drinks himself under the table. It is not long before the young wife discovers that her sottish husband keeps a mistress at his lodge gates, and that he does not propose to consummate his marriage. Relief from a life of intolerable loneliness comes in the form of a young cavalier who stumbles into her bedroom one night after a hearty carouse downstairs, and the acquaintance thus started swiftly ripens into a deeper affection. To disclose the final sequence of events in this curious drama would be to spoil the story for a prospective reader; one must be content to conclude that by commending Miss Irwin's fascinatingly life-like and original characters, and her gift for creating vivid, unforgettable mental pictures.

Synopsis The Twelve-Note Music of Anton Webern by : Kathryn Bailey
This important new study reassesses the position of Anton Webern in twentieth-century music. The twelve-note method of composition adopted by Anton Webern had profound consequences for composers of the next generation such as Stockhausen and Boulez, who saw Webern's music as revolutionary. In her detailed analyses, however, Professor Bailey demonstrates a fundamentally traditional aspect to Webern's creativity, when describing his own music. Professor Bailey analyses all Webern's twelve-note works (from Op. 17 to Op. 31) i.e. the instrumental and vocal music written between 1924 and 1943. These analyses draw on sketch material recently made available at the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel and include transcriptions of little-known drafts and sketches. A most valuable aspect of the book is the inclusion in appendices of such materials as a complete explanation of the row content of each work, the correct prime form of each of the rows from Op. 20 onwards, with a matrix constructed for each, and exhaustive row analyses.
