Excerpt from A New Collection of Voyages, Discoveries and Travels, Vol. 3 The learned Camden informs us, that Sir Francis Drake was the ion of a clergyman, who, in the time of queen Elizabeth, became vicar of Upnore, on the river Medway. But the industrious John Stowe fays, that he was the eldest of twelve brethren, all children of Edmund Drake, of Tavistock, in the county of Devon, mariner; and that he was born in the year 1540. The only way to reconcile these accounts, is to suppose that Edmund Drake, being a zealous Protestant, suffering much for his religion in the days of Henry VIII. and, having likewise a competent share of learning, was ordained deacon in the days of queen Elizabeth, and fettled at Upnore.
