The ontology translation problem (aka ontology interoperability problem) appears when we decide to reuse an ontology (or part of an ontology) with a tool or language that is different from those ones in which the ontology is available. If we force each ontology-based system developer, individually, to commit to the task of translating and incorporating to their systems the ontologies that they need, they will require a lot of effort and time to achieve their objective. This book presents two contributions to the current state of the art on ontology translation among languages and/or tools. The first contribution is a proposal for a new model for building and maintaining ontology translation systems. The second contribution characterises existing ontology translation approaches from the perspectives of semantic and pragmatic preservation, that is, consequence and intended meaning preservation respectively.

As a new generation of technologies, frameworks, concepts and practices for information systems emerge, practitioners, academicians, and researchers are in need of a source where they can go to educate themselves on the latest innovations in this area. Welcome to the proceedings of the 2010 International Conference on Future Gene- tion Communication and Networking (FGCN 2010) – one of the partnering events of the Second International Mega-Conference on Future Generation Information Technology (FGIT 2010). FGCN brings together researchers from academia and industry as well as practit- ners to share ideas, problems and solutions relating to the multifaceted aspects of communication and networking, including their links to computational sciences, mathematics and information technology. In total, 1,630 papers were submitted to FGIT 2010 from 30 countries, which - cludes 150 papers submitted to the FGCN 2010 Special Sessions. The submitted papers went through a rigorous reviewing process: 395 of the 1,630 papers were - cepted for FGIT 2010, while 70 papers were accepted for the FGCN 2010 Special Sessions. Of the 70 papers, 6 were selected for the special FGIT 2010 volume p- lished by Springer in LNCS series. Fifty-one papers are published in this volume, and 13 papers were withdrawn due to technical reasons. We would like to acknowledge the great effort of the FGCN 2010 International Advisory Board and Special Session Co-chairs, as well as all the organizations and individuals who supported the idea of publishing this volume of proceedings, incl- ing SERSC and Springer. The general objective of the thesis is to provide domain independent, and resource independent methods and tools for speeding up the ontology development process and is achieved by reusing and re-engineering as much as possible available non-ontological resources (NORs). To fulfil this overall goal, we have decomposed it into the following methodological and technological objectives: - The definition of methodological aspects related to the reuse of non-ontological resources for building ontologies. - The definition of methodological aspects related to the re-engineering of non-ontological resources for building ontologies. - The creation of a library of patterns for re-engineering non-ontological resources into ontologies. - The development of a software library, NOR2O, that implements the suggestions given by the re-engineering patterns.

Modelling of information is necessary in developing information systems. Information is acquired from many sources, by using various methods and tools. It must be recognized, conceptualized, and conceptually organized efficiently so that users can easily understand and use it. Modelling is needed to understand, explain, organize, predict, and reason on information. It also helps to master the role and functions of components of information systems. Modelling can be performed with many different purposes in mind, at different levels, and by using different notions and different background theories. It can be made by emphasizing users' conceptual understanding of information on a domain level, on an algorithmic level, or on representation levels. On each level, the objects and structures used on them are different, and different rules govern the behavior on them. Therefore the notions, rules, theories, languages, and methods for modelling on different levels are also different. It will be useful if we can develop theories and methodologies for modelling, to be used in different situations, because databases, knowledge bases, and repositories in knowledge management systems, developed on the basis of models and used to technically store information, are growing day by day. In this publication, the interest is focused on modelling of information, and one of the central topics is modelling of time. Scientific and technical papers of high quality are brought together in this book.

This volume contains the proceedings of the seventeenth Jurix conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems (Jurix 2004), which was held at the Harnack Haus of the Max Planck Society, in Berlin, Germany. Although the Jurix conference moved from The Netherlands to Germany, almost half of the papers are from The Netherlands. Except for a paper from Canada, the others are from 5 other countries in Western Europe. The effort to extend Jurix beyond The Netherlands and establish it as the leading European conference on legal knowledge systems is making progress. The papers in this publication focus on the topics of legal knowledge management and information retrieval; legal knowledge acquisition using natural language processing; legal ontologies; case-based reasoning; reasoning about evidence and legal reasoning support.

There is a paradigm shift in Informatics in general and in technologies enhancing human learning in particular. The debate between ‘the evolutionaries’ – those that wish to optimize and refine current approaches – and the ‘revolutionaries’ – those that support a fundamental change of approach – is quite actual. Within the Internet communities, the debate is hidden behind the words ‘semantic WEB’ versus ‘semantic Grid’; within educational technologists between ‘content / resource centered’ and ‘conversation centered’ e-learning, or either between ‘teaching’ and ‘pedagogy’ on the one side, and ‘learning’ and ‘communities of practice’ on the other. In general, in Informatics, the shift from a product-page oriented to a service-conversation oriented view may possibly impact most if not all the foreseen applications, in e-learning, but also in e-science, e-democracy, e-commerce, e-health, etc. Part A of the book is dedicated to position papers: visions about what to do and why to do it in the next years. The remaining parts (B to D) offer partial answers to ‘how’ to do it. Part B concerns what we called content-centered services, i.e.: a vision of learning systems that privileges knowledge and its structures, standards and their interoperability, storage and retrieval services. The subsequent part C is about holistic services to refer to more mature and integrated solutions that address not only content but more generally the creation and management of human Virtual Communities connected on the Grid in order to offer and consume different services facilitating and enhancing human learning. Finally part D is concerned with new directions in learning services.
