This biographical dictionary documents the Union army colonels who commanded regiments from Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. Entries are arranged first by state and then by regiment, and provide a biographical sketch of each colonel focusing on his Civil War service. Many of the colonels covered herein never rose above that rank, failing to win promotion to brigadier general or brevet brigadier general, and have therefore received very little scholarly attention prior to this work.

John Holder made his mark as one of the heroic defenders of Boonesborough. After Daniel Boone left Kentucky, Holder became commander of the fort. Holder married Fanny Callaway, a daughter of Col. Richard Callaway, one of the founders of Boonesborough. Fanny, along with her sister Betsy, and Jemima Boone were captured by the Shawnee in 1776-one of the signature events on the Kentucky frontier. The self-taught Holder established himself as a man of property, acquiring well over 100,000 acres of Kentucky land. He was a commercial-industrial innovator involved in farsighted business enterprises. Under Holder's leadership, the settlement he established about a mile downstream from Boonesborough grew to include a store, tavern, boatyard, ferry, warehouse and mill. His landing on the Kentucky River became a major departure point for flatboats bound for New Orleans with Kentucky produce. Holder's enterprises led to other factories locating in the valley and resulted in Lower Howard's Creek becoming one of the first industrial areas of Kentucky. Much of the area is now enclosed in the Lower Howard's Creek Nature and Heritage Preserve, which will receive all the royalties from the sale of this book.

Colonel Frank Wolford, the acclaimed Civil War colonel of the First Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry, is remembered today primarily for his unenviable reputation. Despite his stellar service record and widespread fame, Wolford ruined his reputation and his career over the question of emancipation and the enlistment of African Americans in the army. Unhappy with Abraham Lincoln’s public stance on slavery, Wolford rebelled and made a series of treasonous speeches against the president. Dishonorably discharged and arrested three times, Wolford, on the brink of being exiled beyond federal lines into the Confederacy, was taken in irons to Washington DC to meet with Lincoln. Lincoln spared Wolford, however, and the disgraced colonel returned to Kentucky, where he was admired for his war record and rewarded politically for his racially based rebellion against Lincoln. Although his military record established him as one of the most vigorous, courageous, and original commanders in the cavalry, Wolford’s later reputation suffered. Dan Lee restores balance to the story of a crude, complicated, but talented man and the unconventional regiment he led in the fight to save the Union.
