Synopsis History of the Civil War in America, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by : Comte De Paris

Excerpt from History of the Civil War in America, Vol. 1 It would have been unbecoming in me to argue upon contro verted questions, national, political, or military, upon which, after careful investigation and mature deliberation, the author has expressed himself decidedly. Least of all have I considered it within my province to say a word as to his estimates of individuals and their relations to the government. He has himself said that his history was written for European readers, who desire to know only his impressions and conclusions. But the book will be largely read in this country by people more capable of judging its facts and its philosophy. Synopsis History of the Civil War in America by : Louis Philippe D'Orleans Comte De Paris

The American Civil War was the most divisive and defining event in the history of the United States of America. Hundreds of books have been written about this war. The greatest and most popular movie ever made, "Gone with The Wind," is about the civil war. Hardly a week goes by without a new book coming out about the Civil Die-heards in the South say it was not a civil war. Former President Jimmy Carter always calls it "The War Between the States." It is almost a heresy in the Deep South to call it a civil war. The author of this book was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He experienced along with his brother some of the heaviest fighting, but he was not American. He was French. He was not just any French guy. He was legally the King of France, also known as Philippe VII of France. He made it to America where he and his brother served as officers in the Union Army in some of the most horrific battles in the American Civil War, including the Peninsula Campaign in South Eastern Virginia where they were lucky to survive. When he got back to France, he never called himself the king even though he was. He preferred to use the title Comte de Paris. There he wrote this book in French, which was translated into English.

Synopsis Pictorial History of the Civil War in the United States of America by : Benson John Lossing

Excerpt from Pictorial History of the Civil War in the United States of America, Vol. 1 The task of making a record of the events of the late Civil War in our Republic is not a pleasant one for an American citizen. It would be more consonant with his wishes to bury in oblivion all knowledge of those events which compose the materials of the sorrowful story of a strife among his brethren, of terrible energy and woeful operations. But that privilege is denied him. The din of the conflict was heard all over the world, and people of all nations were spectators of the scene. The fact cannot be hidden. It has become a part of the history of the inhabitants of the earth, and will forever occupy a conspicuous place in the annals of mankind. What remains for the American citizen to do, is to see that the stylus of history shall make a truthful record. I imposed upon myself the task of making, so far as my ability and an honest purpose would permit, a correct delineation of the events of the conflict, carefully drawn by the pen and pencil, for the consideration and advantage of posterity. I entitle my work "A History of the Civil War," but I ask for it no higher consideration than that of a faithful Chronicle, having the form of history, and aspiring to perform its highest duty, namely: to inspire mankind with a love of justice and a hatred of its opposite, and of every thing that impedes the onward and upward march of humanity.
