Synopsis A Brief History of Europe by : Lucius Hudson Holt
Excerpt from A Brief History of Europe: From 1789 to 1815 This history has been written in the endeavor to present in brief compass the story of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic period in proper perspective against the background of general European conditions. In the account of the Revolution, the authors have attempted to give a fair and impartial estimate of causes and incidents, and to show the reaction of the other states of Europe against events in France. In the account of the Napoleonic period, they have tried, so far as space permitted, to keep before the reader the general European conditions as these affected, and as they were affected by, the policies of the great Emperor. A feature of special importance is the unusually complete presentation of the more important military operations of the period. Without going into technical details the authors have striven to give an accurate and readable account of the strategy and maneuvers by which the campaigns were won or lost. In the division of work, the authors have followed respectively the lines laid down in their previous book, European History, 1862-1914. The Professor of English and History has undertaken the outline of the political history: the Assistant Professor that of the military campaigns. The authors gratefully acknowledge the assistance rendered by Captain William Kelly Harrison, Jr., in drawing the maps for use in the study of the campaigns, and by Major Charles A. King, Jr., in reading the book in manuscript and offering many valuable suggestions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Revolutionary Europe by : H. Morse Stephens
Excerpt from Revolutionary Europe: 1789-1815 In this volume I have endeavoured to write a history of Europe during an important period of transition. I have reduced military details to the smallest possible limits, and have preferred to mention rather than to describe battles and campaigns, in order to have more space to devote to such questions as the Belgian revolution of 1789, the reorganisation of Prussia in 1806-12, and the Congress of Vienna. I have throughout tried to describe the French Revolution in its influence on Europe, and Napoleon's career as a great reformer rather than as a great conqueror. The inner meaning of the period and its general results I have sketched in a short introductory chapter, on which the rest of the volume is really a detailed historical commentary.
