Her first settlers, while yet in the discomforts of their log huts, watching with sleepless vigilance the lurking savage, made education and religion the first objects of interest, and reared the school-house and the sanctuary. Upon these great principles, - universal education and freedom of conscience, - they based the grand super structure they have reared at such cost.
