Synopsis A Garden of Greek Verse by : J. Getty
Odes, hymns, and lyrics from many of Greece's most noted classical poets--including Homer, Hesiod, Sappho, Sophocles, and Euripides--are beautifully illustrated here with details of ancient Greek frescoes, vase paintings, and sculptures. Over the centuries, celebrated writers such as George Chapman, Mary Barnard, John Dryden, Alexander Pope, and W. B. Yeats have been inspired to create contemporary translations of these enduring verses. In this volume are their and other modern poets' captivating translations, accompanied by the original Greek text. This lively combination of the poetry and illustrations, along with notes on each poet and on archaeological sites such as Knossos, Akrotiri, Mycenae, Lipari, and Paestum where the Greek art objects in this book were excavated, makes this volume a perfect introduction to Greek verse.

Synopsis A Garden of Latin Verse by : Yvonne Whiteman
The poetry of Catullus, Virgil, Horace and Ovid has endured over 2,000 years. For most of that time it was read only in Latin, the language of its origin - but over the centuries celebrated writers, from John Dryden to Aubrey Beardsley to Ezra Pound, have been inspired to create their own translations. Each verse extract appears both in Latin and English, illustrated with a detail from an ancient Roman painting or mosaic - many of them treasures from Pompeii and Herculaneum, preserved by the volcanic eruption which destroyed the two cities in 79 AD. The images capture the spirit of the age in which this enchanting poetry was written and, accompanied by a biographical note on each poet, make a perfect introduction to the towering civilization that was Rome.

Synopsis Ancient Greek poetry and Literature. The Collected Works of Homer, Hesiod, and Sappho (Illustrated): The Illiad, The Odyssey, Works and Days, Theogony, Lyric Poetry by : Homer
The longevity of Greek ideas, images, and systems of thought bears witness to the incomparable originality of ancient Greek scientific and artistic achievements and the genius of Hellenist society. It is on the foundation of Hellenist achievements that many of our modern advancements have developed. Greek culture also significantly impacted the development of literature and education, beginning with the Romans and expanding to Europe and the West. While the best-known literary masterpiece of the Archaic Greek period is the so-called Homeric epics – The Illiad and The Odyssey - other influential pieces were written by Hesiod and Sappho. Hesiod’s two known works were religious and instructive: Works and Days and Theogony. The ancient Greeks revered Homer and Hesiod and often cited their names together in theological and theological works. While the two could have been contemporaries, some estimate that Hesiod lived up to 100 years after Homer. Sappho was an ancient Greek poetess and musician. She pioneered song lyrics and the ancient Greeks included her in the canon of nine lyric poets. Plato even numbered her among the Parnassian goddesses, referring to her as the tenth muse. Homer. The Iliad. Translated by Alexander Pope Homer. The Odyssey. Translated by William Cowper Hesiod. Works and Days and Theogony. Translated by Hugh G. Evelyn-White Sappho. The Complete Poems. Translated by John Myers O'Hara
