Synopsis Not Just Private by : Craig Bakker
Both within the church and outside of it, popular discourse around sex is often shallow and individualistic. This is especially true on the topic of sex outside of marriage. Not Just Private explains how our sexual practices can and should stem from our deeply held, uniquely Christian convictions--convictions that mean we cannot talk about sex apart from Christian community or Christian character. Laying out those foundations allows us to recover Christian insights that many of us have lost and to identify the cultural syncretism that has crept into our churches. With these foundations in view, we can see how sex is not about following rules or avoiding harm but rather about producing certain kinds of individuals and communities. This is a book for Christians who want to be chaste but are not sure why they should be. This is also a book for non-Christians wondering why some Christians practice what Oscar Wilde described as the greatest sexual perversion: namely, chastity. In the end, Not Just Private shows both how Christian perceptions and beliefs are deeply at odds with the practice of extramarital sex and how the perceptions and beliefs that support extramarital sex are unchristian.

Synopsis Crisis and Critique by : Rodrigo Cordero
Fragility is a condition that inhabits the foundations of social life. It remains mostly unnoticed until something breaks and dislocates the sense of completion. In such moments of rupture, the social world reveals the stuff of which it is made and how it actually works; it opens itself to question. Based on this claim, this book reconsiders the place of the notions of crisis and critique as fundamental means to grasp the fragile condition of the social and challenges the normalization and dissolution of these ‘concepts’ in contemporary social theory. It draws on fundamental insights from Hegel, Marx, and Adorno as to recover the importance of the critique of concepts for the critique of society, and engages in a series of studies on the work of Habermas, Koselleck, Arendt, and Foucault as to consider anew the relationship of crisis and critique as immanent to the political and economic forms of modernity. Moving from crisis to critique and from critique to crisis, the book shows that fragility is a price to be paid for accepting the relational constitution of the social world as a human domain without secure foundations, but also for wishing to break free from all attempts at giving closure to social life as an identity without question. This book will engage students of sociology, political theory and social philosophy alike.

Synopsis Foundations of the Everyday by : Eran Dorfman
We are used to seeing the everyday as an ordinary aspect of life, something that we need to "overcome"; whereas it actually plays a crucial role in any event of our lives. This highly original book engages with a range of thinkers and texts from across the fields of phenomenology, psychoanalysis and critical theory, including Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Freud and Benjamin, together with innovative analysis of French literature and the visual arts, to demonstrate that the role of repetition and deferral in modernity has changed dramatically. Rather than allowing the everyday gradually to integrate singular events into its repetitive texture, events are experienced now as self-enclosed entities, allegedly disconnected from the everyday, leading to its impoverishment. The book thus offers a novel understanding of being, body, trauma and shock, but within the framework of the everyday as a concept that deserves a theory of its very own.
