From the workshop, the kitchen, and the stable, we hear the most sacred words warbled lightly, because they have become familiar in church or chapel wedded to taking tunes. The English people, for lack of national Volkslieder such as the Germans possess, have become a hymn-singing people; and the hymn is sung regardless of the character of the words, because the people are cheerful and want to sing. Of late years Messrs. Sankey and Moody, and, later still, the Salvation Army, have introduced religious songs which have at once become favourites, because the airs have been secular, and, in some cases, the words rollicking. The result has been a distinct lowering of the reverence of the people for holy things and holy words. Sacred aspirations and names, at which angels and devils bow, are trolled out or roared to music-hall tunes, sometimes by tipsy men, and often without thought. The tendency of these songs is not only to irreverence and profanity, but also to encourage heretical views of the scheme of Salvation. Justification is upheld as a sentimental outgush of excited hysteria, not as the gradual growth of a spiritual life; and this mischievous teaching poisons the sources of the moral conscience. Excerpt from Book of Worship With Hymns and Tunes AT the meeting of the General Synod at Canton, in 1893, two Com mittees, of five members each, were appointed, one to revise the Hymns, the other the Tunes, of our Book of Worship, the two Committees to act in co operation. At the next convention of the General Synod, these Committees reported as instructed, giving the plan of their proceedings as well as their results. These may be found printed in the Minutes of the Convention at Hagerstown, Md., in 189 5. At that time they were authorized to complete their nearly finished work and hand it over to the Hymn Book Publishing Committee for publication, allowing the Church three months more for sug gestions. Careful attention was given to all the suggestions - very few in number - which were offered. The delay in publication has arisen not from any want of harmony in the Committees on the work, but from the nature of the case, and, largely, from the difficulties connected with securing the right to use hymns and tunes that were copyright property. Care has been taken to give correctly the names and dates of the authors of hymns and tunes, and where the original text of hymns has been changed, this is indicated by the letter a (altered). In many cases the number of stanzas has been lessened. In a number of instances familiar hymns have alternate, unnumbered tunes attached. Excerpt from Songs of Pilgrimage: A Hymnal for the Churches of Christ Second, he has endeavored to seek out and gather from original sources, other hymns and tunes of standard authors, which from various causes have fallen into disuse, and are less familiar, though perhaps not less meritorious than others, and, which by careful abridgment and revision it is hoped may be rescued from oblivion and again made useful in the Churches of Christ. Third, to these he has added a choice selection of more recent hymns of varied or unknown authorship, many of which have not heretofore appeared in manuals of praise, and some of which, being abridged, amended, and arranged, are now first fitted to be used in the service and worship of the house of prayer. Fourth, with these are included a number of original hymns and tunes, which are sent forth with some sense of the responsibility incurred either in publishing or withholding them. Hymns from the same source, previously printed, have been caught up, republished in various collections, and widely sung. The reception of those contained in this collection cannot be fore seen. But while many remain unpublished, it has seemed proper to issue these, especially as through the compactness of its mechanical ar rangement, the book, though containing some five hundred hymns not to be found in other collections, still remains portable in form and moderate in price. The unfamiliar hymns by well-known and standard authors need neither apology nor recommendation; and if among the new hymns there shall one be discovered which the Church of God will not willingly let die, it will be a justification for the existence of this volume, and an occasion of devout thanksgiving to Him who is both the source and the object of the songs of his people.
