Synopsis A Double Nickel's Worth of Memories by : Stan Giles
It is often said that life lessons are more often 'caught' then 'taught' and this collection of memoirs reminds parents that our children are always watching, often laughing, and occasionally learning. Written to honor his father Gerald in his eightieth year, this memoir highlights 55 (the 'double-nickle') childhood interactions between the author and his father written during the author's fifty-fifth year. Sometimes funny, often poignant, the reader will likely read and remember stories from their own childhood.

Synopsis A Nickel's Worth of Skim Milk by : Robert J. Hastings
Told from the point of view of a young boy, this account shows how a family "faced the 1930s head on and lived to tell the story." It is the story of growing up in southern Illinois, specifically the Marion, area during the Great Depression. But when it was first published in 1972 the book proved to be more than one writer's memories of depression-era southern Illinois. "People started writing me from all over the country," Hastings notes. "And all said much the same: 'You were writing about my family, as much as your own. That's how I remember the 1930s, too.'" As he proves time and again in this book, Hastings is a natural storyteller who can touch upon the detail that makes the tale both poignant and universal. He brings to life a period that marked every man, woman, and child who lived through it even as that national experience fades into the past.

Synopsis Memory's Orbit by : Joseph Natoli
Mixing memoir and cultural criticism, Memory's Orbit examines the intersections between a wide range of films and current events, finding its theme and orbiting narrative structure in the personal stories we live within and their relationship to the social and cultural order. Joseph Natoli covers such films as The Matrix, American Beauty, Fight Club, Eyes Wide Shut, and American History X, as well as such headline events as the death of John F. Kennedy Jr., the dot-com boom, the WTO protests in Seattle, and Bush versus Gore, consistently identifying those aspects of the social order that have shaped his narrating frame. Eschewing theoretical exposition and jargon, Natoli performs postmodern critique, and this book continues his innovative work in the genre of cultural studies.

Synopsis Metaphor & Memory by : Cynthia Ozick
From the author of The Messiah of Stockholm and Art and Ardor comes a new collection of supple, provocative, and intellectually dazzling essays. In Metaphor & Memory, Cynthia Ozick writes about Saul Bellow and Henry James, William Gaddis and Primo Levi. She observes the tug-of-war between written and spoken language and the complex relation between art's contrivances and its moral truths. She has given us an exceptional book that demonstrates the possibilities of literature even as it explores them.

Synopsis B-17 Memories by : T/Sgt. James Lee Hutchinson Ed.S.
The Memphis Belle, completed 25 missions and became the symbol of Eighth Air Force success in the air war over Europe. Its national tour rallied support and encouraged citizens enduring rationing and sacrifices for victory. Heavy bomber aircrews proved their value with precision bombing. My writing is based on memories, diaries and interviews of other veterans and my teenage experiences as an Eighth Air Force B-17 radio/gunner on twenty combat missions with the 490th Bomb Group (H). This fourth book presents short stories of boys on B-17 Flying Fortress crews flying deadly missions to destroy German and Italian military targets. Twenty-six thousand airmen died and thousands more were wounded. The sky was our arena and we paved the way for Infantry and Armored Divisions slogging through heat, rain or snow to preserve our freedom. Many B-17 gunners were teenagers who enlisted or were drafted, trained and sent into combat before they could legally vote or buy a drink. They saved our freedom and came home to build the USA into the most powerful nation in the world. I self-publish because I am 89 and my time is limited. I thank God that I have been able to record more than 350 stories of my generation. "WW II veterans are fading into History — less than two million of the sixteen million who served are left to tell their stories" See my interview online at "Wings over Europe my Smithville"
