Synopsis A Dictionary of Musical Information, Vol. 1 of 3 by : John Weeks Moore

Excerpt from A Dictionary of Musical Information, Vol. 1 of 3: Containing Also a Vocabulary of Musical Terms, and a List of Modern Musical Works Published in the United States From 1640 to 1875 IN preparing this dictionary or musical information, my desire has been to make it meet the popular demand for a book of reference concerning musical persons and subjects not mentioned in any other published work, and to furnish it at a price sufficiently small to place it in the hands of all persons in any way interested in musical affairs. To do this, it was necessary to abbreviate every arti cle as much as possible, in order to crowd the largest amount of information into the smallest practicable space. I have done this in the belief that five lines read with interest is better than fifty lines read with indifference, and worth more to the careful reader than five hundred lines to the careless. Synopsis Music in Shakespeare by : Christopher R. Wilson

With an A-Z of over 300 entries, Music in Shakespeare is the most comprehensive study of all the musical terms found in Shakespeare's complete works. It includes a definition of each musical term in its historical and theoretical context, and explores the diverse extent of musical imagery across the full range of Shakespeare's dramatic and poetic work, as well as analysing the usage of instruments and sound effects on the Shakespearean stage. This is a comprehensive reference guide for scholars and students with interests in the thematic and allegorical relevance of music in Shakespeare, and the history of performance. Identifying all musical terms found in the Shakespeare canon, it will also be of use to the growing number of directors and actors concerned with recovering the staging conditions of the early modern theatre.

Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Music of the Classical Period by : Bertil H. Van Boer

When we speak of "classical music" it often refers rather loosely to serious "art" music but at the core is really the music of the classical period running from about 1730 to 1800, give or take. This was truly one of the most glorious periods for both composition and performance and it is this classical music which is still at the core of today's repertoire. Obvious names connected with this period are Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, but there were many more still reasonably well known like Gluck and C.P.E Bach, and dozens more who are regrettably little known today. This Historical Dictionary of Music of the Classical Period includes not only these composers, but also eminent conductors and performers, patrons, and publishers. There are also dictionary entries on major centers of music-making, typical instruments, important technical terms, and emerging musical forms, including the symphony and opera. Indeed, with a 1,000 cross-referenced entries, there is information on most matters of interest. This is prefaced by an extensive chronology, tracing the course of this period from year to year, and an introduction taking a careful look at the period as a whole. Finally, there is a substantial bibliography. Surely, this is a book which will appeal not only to students and researchers but all music-lovers.
