Towards the close of his first captivity at Rome (see Introd. To 1 and at a time when, it would seem, his imprisonment was of a closer and harsher character, and his earthly prospects, though not by any means without hope (ch. I. 25, 26; ii. Yet, in many respects, cheerless and depressing (eh. I. 20 sq., ii. 17, It has thus been supposed, with some probability, to have been written after the death of the Praetorian Prefect (burrus) to whom the apostle had been at first entrusted (acts xxviii.
