Synopsis A Covenant in Shanghai by : David Brailovsky

A Covenant in Shanghai is about survival and alienation. We follow Daniel and his three friends as they grow from childhood to adolescence and to early manhood. We share their tensions, frustrations, and their anxieties, as they struggle to survive by overcoming the temptations that this sybaritic and decadent city offers at every corner. It is about alienation, of not accepting and of not being accepted by an ancient and proud culture. The four friends do not feel at home in the East, nor are they comfortable in the West. They have to learn how to live and survive in this limbo. The four boys of different backgrounds: American, English, French and Russian, accentuate the kaleidoscopic nature of a fascinating, yet often ominous and tragic lifestyle. This is also the story of the survival of a majestic and resilient city that suffers with dignity the humiliations of shortages, the ravages of epidemics, the conflict of political ideologies, and refuses to be conquered by desecrations of wars. This multi-ethnic, multicultured metropolis is neither Western nor Chinese. Like its population it is alien to both. It is a tragic hybrid grafted on the map of China.

Synopsis Reference Guide to Christian Missionary Societies in China: From the Sixteenth to the Twentieth Century by : R. G. Tiedemann

This comprehensive guide will facilitate scholarly research concerning the history of Christianity in China as well as the wider Sino-Western cultural encounter. It will assist scholars in their search for material on the anthropological, educational, medical, scientific, social, political, and religious dimensions of the missionary presence in China prior to 1950.The guide contains nearly five hundred entries identifying both Roman Catholic and Protestant missionary sending agencies and related religious congregations. Each entry includes the organization's name in English, followed by its Chinese name, country of origin, and denominational affiliation. Special attention has been paid to identifying the many small, lesser-known groups that arrived in China during the early decades of the twentieth century. In addition, a special category of the as yet little-studied indigenous communities of Chinese women has also been included. Multiple indexes enhance the guide's accessibility.

Synopsis Christianity in China by : Xiaoxin Wu

Now revised and updated to incorporate numerous new materials, this is the major source for researching American Christian activity in China, especially that of missions and missionaries. It provides a thorough introduction and guide to primary and secondary sources on Christian enterprises and individuals in China that are preserved in hundreds of libraries, archives, historical societies, headquarters of religious orders, and other repositories in the United States. It includes data from the beginnings of Christianity in China in the early eighth century through 1952, when American missionary activity in China virtually ceased. For this new edition, the institutional base has shifted from the Princeton Theological Seminary (Protestant) to the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural Relations at the University of San Francisco (Jesuit), reflecting the ecumenical nature of this monumental undertaking.

Synopsis On the Road to Siangyang by : Jack R. Lundbom

On the Road to Siangyang tells the story of a Swedish immigrant church in America undertaking, soon after its organization, a mission to central China that would last nearly sixty years, from 1890 to 1949, when Christian missionaries had to leave the Chinese Mainland upon the establishment of the People's Republic. Covenant missionary work was carried on along broad lines: preaching and evangelism; medical and benevolence work; and education for boys, girls, and adults. Missionaries labored amid turbulent years: through the Boxer Rebellion (1900), the fall of the Manchu dynasty (1911), ongoing civil war, and more than a decade of Japanese occupation (1931-1949). Three Covenant missionaries were kidnapped by the communists and held for ransom, and another three were murdered on the road from Siangyang to Kingchow. But the mission work has borne fruit, and a final chapter reports the Christian work being carried on today throughout Hubei Province.

Synopsis Missions, Nationalism and the End of Empire by : Stanley

Christian missions have often been seen as the religious arm of Western imperialism. What is rarely appreciated is the role they played in bringing about an end to the Western colonial empires after the Second World War. Missions, Nationalism, and the End of Empire explores this neglected subject. Respected authorities on the history of missions explore new territory in these chapters, examining from diverse angles the linkages between Christianity, nationalism, and the dissolution of the colonial empires in Asia and Africa. This work not only sheds light on the relation of religion and politics but also uncovers the sometimes paradoxical implications of the church's call to bring the gospel to all the world.
