This volume offers an overview of the methodologies of research in the field of military studies. As an institution relying on individuals and resources provided by society, the military has been studied by scholars from a wide range of disciplines: political science, sociology, history, psychology, anthropology, economics and administrative studies. The methodological approaches in these disciplines vary from computational modelling of conflicts and surveys of military performance, to the qualitative study of military stories from the battlefield and veterans experiences. Rapidly developing technological facilities (more powerful hardware, more sophisticated software, digitalization of documents and pictures) render the methodologies in use more dynamic than ever. The Routledge Handbook of Research Methods in Military Studies offers a comprehensive and dynamic overview of these developments as they emerge in the many approaches to military studies. The chapters in this Handbook are divided over four parts: starting research, qualitative methods, quantitative methods, and finalizing a study, and every chapter starts with the description of a well-published study illustrating the methodological issues that will be dealt with in that particular chapter. Hence, this Handbook not only provides methodological know-how, but also offers a useful overview of military studies from a variety of research perspectives. This Handbook will be of much interest to students of military studies, security and war studies, civil-military relations, military sociology, political science and research methods in general.

This publication presents the results of an intensive 11-month program for three military research fellows. The Under Secretary of Defense (Acquisition) (USD (A)) chartered the Defense Systems Management College (DSMC) Military Research Fellowship Program in 1987. The program brings together selected officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force for two primary purposes: first to provide advanced professional and military education for the participating officers; and second, to conduct research that will benefit the Department of Defense (DoD) acquisition community. This report focuses on transatlantic cooperative programs. Cooperation with Europe was chosen because of the important political, military, economic, and historical transatlantic ties, but most important, because America's relationship with Europe is rapidly evolving. There is substantial concern about a "Fortress America - Fortress Europe" syndrome. Political leaders and the public both here and in Europe are attempting to come to terms with the meaning of the NATO alliance in the post-Cold War era. European assertiveness and unity are clashing with dated perceptions about Europe held by Americans. Our intended audience is both the U.S. defense acquisition workforce and policy makers. For the former, we hoped to produce a useful guide that will make them more effective as members of a cooperative team. For the latter, we attempted to provide an updated comprehensive view of the salient features of transatlantic armaments cooperation and some ways in which the context is changing.

This book comparatively examines the preferences of four key arms-producing states towards European joint armaments programmes. The European defence market is characterised by a mixture of inter-state competition and European cooperation, and this work assesses why countries sometimes decide to cooperate with their partners, while in other instances they refrain from doing so. In order to shed light on this empirical puzzle, the book focuses on state-defence industry relations in the four major European arms producers: France, Germany, Italy and the UK. The main argument is that the public or private governance of industrial suppliers and market size are the two decisive variables that explain the simultaneous presence of cooperation and competition in European defence procurement. Specifically, it argues that in public governance ecosystems, arms industries are able to "capture" the state's decision-making processes to their own advantage. In private governance ecosystems, the state is relatively autonomous from defence industry's influence and able to pursue larger macro-economic and military benefits. Moreover, the strategy pursued by governments and defence firms is decisively shaped by market size because of its importance in determining the relative costs and benefits of collaborative arrangements. This book will be of much interest to students of EU policy, defence studies, European politics and International Relations.
