Synopsis Cultivation and Conservation of Endangered Medicinal Plants ( Tibetan Medicinal Plants for Health ) [Men-Tsee-Khang - སྨན་རྩིས་ཁང་།] by :

Acknowledgements: In 2005, I was sent in an official capacity to the Arava Institute of Environmental Studies in Kibbutz Ketura, Israel, to conduct research for a short period on how to conserve medicinal plants through cultivation. A project was funded by Dr. Sarah Sallon, Director, the Louis L. Borick Natural Medicine Research Center, Hadassah Medical Organization, Jerusalem, Israel. With the assistance of Dr. Elaine M. Solowey, who is a horticulturalist at the Institute, I drafted a list of endangered medicinal plants based on guidelines given by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, 2000 ) and TRAFFIC India (Trade Records Analysis of Flora and Fauna in Commerce, 2000), with supplementary criteria drawn from Tibetan medicine. I started writing and collecting data on the propagation and cultivation of each medicinal plant based on these guidelines and Dr. Solowey’s advice. Due to other pressing official projects, however, this work remained on hold for some years. From 2013, I began to work on the project in earnest and started to writing and collecting data on the propagation and cultivation of each of the selected medicinal plants. This book on endangered medicinal plant cultivation is supposed to be an experimental, trial field guide for the propagation of these species. It is intended for ethno-botanists, environmentalists, herbalists, horticulturists, and practitioners who are interested in creating medicinal plant gardens both in urban and rural areas. The guidelines are mainly based on traditional knowledge, my personal experience and observations and practical experiments performed in the field. The book, “Cultivation and Conservation of Endangered Medicinal Plants {Tibetan Medicinal Plants for Health}” is the first of its kind. A few errors must certainly have crept in, for which I am solely responsible. I would be most grateful to anyone who would be kind enough to point these out, for the improvement of future projects and editions. I would like to give my sincere thanks to the administration of Men-Tsee-Khang for facilitating support for this important project and its successful completion. Special thanks to director of the Men-Tsee-Khang, Mr. Tsering Tashi Phuri, for his encouragement and invaluable support for the project. Dr. Tsewang Tamdin, visiting physician to His Holiness the Dalai Lama for his kind suggestions. My thanks too, to Dr. Tsering Norbu for his kind helpful suggestions. I would like to deeply thank Mrs. Anne for going through and proof-reading the manuscript and for her helpful suggestions, Mr. Gautam Verma, who refined the language, and Mr. Jan van der Valk (John), University of Kent UK. and Mr. Ben Joffe, University of Colorado Boulder, USA for their editorial help and constructive suggestions during their short stay in Dharamsala. I also thank my colleagues in Men-Tsee-Khang for their kind help and support: Ms. Tenzin Kunsang and Mr. Tsering Paljor of computer section, Dr. Norchung and Mrs. Lhamo Kyizom of Doc & Publication Department. I am also thankful to Mr. Ngachung and Ms.Tenzin Kunsang for their helping in designing book and computer setting.

Synopsis Essentials of Tibetan Traditional Medicine by : Thinley Gyatso

Tibetan medicine is a rarified field with few publications in English; it is also one of the most comprehensive of alternative therapies, addressing body, mind, and spirit. Written for intermediate-level practitioners, Essentials of Tibetan Traditional Medicine brings this important healing tradition to Western practitioners. The book begins by summarizing the basics behind Tibetan medical theory and its methods of diagnosis. The second part of the book presents the core concepts of wind, bile, phlegm, dark phlegm, epidemic fever, heat, and cold, along with their corresponding nosologies, differential diagnoses, and treatments. The third section covers therapeutics, with an emphasis on medicinals—the mainstay of contemporary practice. A chapter on therapeutic strategies discusses unclear diagnosis and other challenging clinical situations. Other chapters explore the crucial components of lifestyle and diet. Each herb and animal product used in Tibetan medicine is profiled on its own page, with its Tibetan, common, and botanical names; its key properties and clinical uses; its known pharmacological properties; and a simple illustration. This useful handbook concludes with a description and indepth analysis of some 60 frequently used formulas.

Synopsis The Archaeology of Tibetan Books by : Agnieszka Helman-Ważny

In Archaeology of Tibetan Books, Agnieszka Helman-Ważny explores the varieties of artistic expression, materials, and tools that have shaped Tibetan books over the millennia. Digging into the history of the bookmaking craft, the author approaches these ancient texts primarily through the lens of their artistry, while simultaneously showing them as physical objects embedded in pragmatic, economic, and social frameworks. She provides analyses of several significant Tibetan books—which usually carry Buddhist teachings—including a selection of manuscripts from Dunhuang from the 1st millennium C.E., examples of illuminated manuscripts from Western and Central Tibet dating from the 15th century, and fragments of printed Tibetan Kanjurs from as early as 1410. This detailed study of bookmaking sheds new light on the books' philosophical meanings.

Synopsis The Tree Dispensary by : Christina Stapley

The Tree Dispensary explores the history, folklore and medicinal uses of native European trees, beautifully illustrated with the author's own photographs. The book presents a thorough and deep appreciation of trees as the author has experienced them through everyday life, as a herb historian and practising herbalist. Categorised into seasons, each of the 30 tree chapters covers cultivation, cookery, foraging, crafts, history, botany, medicinal use and mythology. Original herbals are used as source material for the historical section, allowing voices from the past to speak for themselves. A 'Herbalists Reference' for each tree includes medicinal uses, dosage and constituents and reflects the author's own extensive experience of using these wonderful tree remedies. 'For years as a herbalist I had been walking about looking down for what was growing around my feet. The emphasis changed to looking up and I was delighted by the exquisite detail of tiny female flowers on trees, which I simply could not believe I had missed before. I took photographs, pressed herbarium samples, harvested and studied...experimented with barks, catkins and leaves to produce dyes. Never again will a tincture or dried herb of tree origin be simply a name on a label and a list of constituents, actions and indications. I hope as you read this book...you will also feel a stronger connection and wish to explore, plant and care for trees yourselves.'Volume 2 of The Tree Dispensary covering exotic trees will be published in Autumn 2021.
