The Forest Dames is a novel based on war experiences that must be told in order to free the mind, disseminate information and prick the conscience of war agitators. It is a true life story fictionaised to reduce impact. The book tells the story of a young girl who lived with her parents in the relatively calm and peaceful British colony of Nigeria, where shortly after independence compatriots went for each other's throats. This soon exploded into a full blown civil war and from that time onwards, nothing was ever the same again. The war came with ugly incidences, one of which was the hunt for and abduction of girls and women to be forcibly converted to bed mates. Families sought hiding places for their 'eligible' females but these hide-outs were soon discovered through the power of and intimidation from the gun. Two women however decided that their daughters will never be made victims. They found a 'safe haven' for their daughters the evil forest where the roars of wild animals were continually heard. But this is nothing compared to the brutal termination of lives and wanton destruction of properties through air, land and marine attacks; including starvation that was the order of the day, and which placed the final death mark on the people. The forest dames, four in number, survived the war and one of them decides to tell the unfortunate story of the elasticity of human suffering. The poem describes a ceremony called Ascension Day in England and the presence of children in a cathedral to celebrate and do their singing activities. So, this term paper aims to analyze stylistically Blake's poem “Holy Thursday” in terms of phonetic, phonological, graphological, grammatical, lexical levels and figures of speech.

This volume forms part of the Applied Linguistics and Language Study collection that looks at the field of analysing and appreciating literary texts. First published in 1975, this text makes a considerable contribution to extending our view of the principles underlying language teaching and curriculum design. The author begins by distinguishing the idea that discipline from the pedagogic subject in order to demonstrate that stylistics is Janus like in the way it can be treated, for example, at school or university, as a way from linguistics to literary study or the reverse. To understand this bidirectionality he explains distinctions between the linguist’s text and the critic’s messages by introducing the concept of discourse as a means through which to understand the communicative value of passages of language.

Postcolonial and contemporary African literatures have always been marked by an acute sensitivity to the politics of language, an attentiveness inscribed in the linguistic fabric of their own modes of expression. It is curious however, that despite the prevalence of a much-touted 'linguistic turn' in twentieth century theory and cultural production, language has frequently been neglected by literary studies in general. Even more curiously, postcolonial literary studies, an erstwhile emergent and now established discipline which has from the outset contained important elements of linguistic critique, has eschewed any sustained engagement with this topic. This absence is salient in the study of African literatures, despite, for instance, the prominence of orature in the African literary tradition right up to the present day, and sporadic meditations on the part of such luminaries as Achebe and Ngũgĩ. Beyond this, however, there has been little scholarly work attuned to the multifarious aspects of language and linguistic politics in the study of African literature. The present volume aims to rectify such lacunae by making a substantial interdisciplinary and transcultural contribution to the gradual reinstatement of the 'linguistic turn' in African literary studies. The volume focuses variously on postcolonial and transcultural African literatures, areas of literary production where the confluence of several languages, whether indigenous and (post)colonial in the first case, and local and global in the second case, appears to be a central and decisive factor in the formation and transformation of the continent and its peoples' cultural identities.
