Synopsis A Bibliography of the Zygaenidae by : Tremewan
The Zygaeninae (burnets) are diurnal, aposematic moths which occur in the Palaearctic, Oriental and Afrotropical regions. The unusual biology of this small subfamily of fewer than 120 species has inspired research on their ecology, chemical ecology, pheromone biology, ethology and mimicry, in addition to systematics, life history, larval host plants, genetics and geographical and individual variation. This bibliography of about 2750 entries has been checked against the original publications and is as complete as possible to the end of 1986. It is comprehensively indexed by subject and bibliography reference number.

Synopsis The Aurelian Legacy – a History of British Butterflies and their Collectors by : Michael Salmon
Although the collecting of butterflies is today an emotive subject, it is impossible to separate a history of British butterflies from a history of their collectors, without whose activities our knowledge of the identification, occurrence, distribution, and variation of British butterflies would be much the poorer. Liberally laced with contemporary quotations, this book brings to life the past three hundred years of butterfly study, with details of early societies, collecting equipment, biographies of 101 deceased lepidopterists, with portraits where available, as well as the chequered history in Britain of some 35 species of butterfly. The colour plates include some of the finest butterfly illustrations ever.

Synopsis The Practice of British Geology, 1750-1850 by : Hugh Torrens
Geology is the most historical of all sciences. Yet its own history remains neglected, especially the many aspects of how geology was practised in the past. This volume analyses the careers of some important practical figures in English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish geology between 1750 and 1850. These include people who would have regarded themselves more as mining engineers (or ’coal viewers' as they were then called in the vital coal industry) or ’mineral surveyors' as today's mineral prospectors were first called (from 1808), or even inventors. Their expertise, in the land which led the industrial revolution, took them all over the world. Those included here went to Italy, and South (Peru) and North America (Virginia and Canada). The practice of geology, through the search for mines and minerals, has been much less attended to by historians than the geology which was undertaken by leisured amateurs - even though practical geology was as important in the past as the oil industry is today.

Synopsis A Dictionary of Entomology by : Gordon Gordh
"This book is a comprehensive, fully cross-referenced collection of over 28,000 terms, names and phrases used in entomology, incorporating an estimated 43,000 definitions. It is the only listing which covers insect anatomy, behaviour, biology, ecology, histology, molecular biology, morphology, pest management, taxonomy and systematics. The origin, etymology, part of speech and definition of each term and phrase are all provided, including the language, meaning or root of each term and constituent parts. Where meanings have changed, or terms have been borrowed from other disciplines, the most current usage is indicated. The common names of insects, their scientific binomen and taxonomic classification are provided, with diagnoses of pest species in many cases. All insect order, suborder, superfamily, family and subfamily names are given, together with the diagnostic features of orders and families. Names of deceased entomologists, or scientists from other fields who have contributed to entomology are included, with the citation for their biography or obituary. The list of names is global, including entomologists from Asia, whose research has often been neglected by western scientists. This book is an essential reference source for all professionals and students of entomology and related disciplines."--p. [4] of cover.
