Synopsis The Eight Core Values of the Japanese Businessman by : Erdener Kaynak
The values and behaviors of the Japanese businessman--and of the Japanese in general--are quite diverse and keep changing, making it difficult for anyone (including the Japanese themselves) to truly understand why they act the way they do. The Eight Core Values of the Japanese Businessman saves readers time and effort when pursuing business opportunities in Japan because it identifies the core values of the Japanese businessman, ranging from the obvious and public, “Diligence,” to the more private, “Silence as Eloquence” and “Perception of Time.” After identifying these eight core values, Yasutaka Sai explores the history and modern interpretation of each. Based on over 300 Japanese language sources--otherwise unavailable to those who do not read Japanese--The Eight Core Values of the Japanese Businessman reveals the diversity and dynamism of Japanese values and behaviors. This information empowers businesspeople and international business educators to develop solid business relationships with the Japanese. With many years of experience, the author focuses on specific values that are most common among Japanese in the business world. These are not exclusive, but the most prevalent or widely shared values that Western businesspeople are likely to encounter: Japanese diligence, work ethic, and “Gambarism” or persistence group orientation: sense of belonging and participation, spirit of harmony, interpersonal relations aesthetics and perfectionism curiosity and emphasis on innovation respect for form and “Hana Yori Dango” or practicality a mind for competition and outlook on rewards the value of silence as eloquence perception of time As there is no single uniformly accepted source for the values of today's Japanese citizen or business person, Sai's exploration opens a vital window into understanding many Japanese values and behaviors. The Eight Core Values of the Japanese Businessman is vital reading for those with international business concerns--business and management educators, businesspeople interested in how Japanese managers manage and employees work, and practicing managers interested in cross-cultural management issues. It allows readers to develop good relationships with the Japanese based on a realistic understanding of how they think and act, both individually and as members of business organizations.

Synopsis Control And Coordination Of Subsidiaries In Japanese Corporate Groups by : Akira Mitsumasu
This book attempts to bridge academic knowledge and practitioner's knowledge regarding the control and coordination of subsidiaries in Japan. It specifically explores two questions: why do corporations establish subsidiaries and form corporate groups? How do corporate groups manage their subsidiaries? Based on the case studies presented in the book, the author identifies four different types of parent-subsidiary relationships and uses this typology to understand control and coordination issues within Japanese organizations. The chapters in the book are designed to cover many characteristics of large Japanese corporate groups. Chapter 2 gives the definition of corporate group in Japan and distinguishes it from the keiretsu business group, while Chapter 3 provides a backdrop and context for understanding the corporate landscape in which Japanese firms today operate. Chapters 4 and 5 provide a literature review on some of the major literatures that are related to the research questions concerning why corporate groups exist and how they are managed. Chapter 6 attempts to bridge academic knowledge with practitioners knowledge by looking at five corporate groups: Hitachi, Panasonic, Mitsubishi Heavy Industry, Nihon Yusen and Japan Airlines, and by identifying areas where practitioner's knowledge could be used to expand existing theories. Chapter 7 proposes a four-part classification of subsidiaries to facilitate the discussion of different issues that arise under different parent-subsidiary settings. Chapter 8 attempts to illustrate a simplistic roadmap for creating successful subsidiary management, while Chapter 9 concludes the book.Written in a simple and accessible manner, this book will be of interest to business practitioners, decision makers in organizations and academics alike.

Synopsis Japanese Business in Canada by : Richard W. Wright
From the back cover: Richard Wright's study chronicles and analyses the Japanese business presence in Canada. It reveals several distinguishing characteristics of Japanese investment, which should help allay some traditional Canadian concerns about foreign investment. Japanese investment is small in proportion to the total volume of Canada-Japan trade. Moreover, unlike other traditional foreign investors, who generally seek to gain direct control of affiliated companies in Canada, Japanese investors aim primarily to secure reliable flows of raw materials. Because the Japanese emphasis is on trade rather than on investment flows, a high proportion of Japanese investment is in the form of loans rather than equity, and the Japanese often take minority holdings or enter into joint ventures. The role of Japanese investment is thus a very different one from that which has been a source of concern about foreign ownership in Canada.

Synopsis Business Strategy and National Culture by : Denise Tsang
'The backward linkage strategies of major multinationals differ significantly between firms within the same industry. In this provocative book, Denise Tsang explains these differences in strategy in terms of the culture of the parent company and the age of the firm. Her case study of the European microcomputer industry encompasses major multinationals from the US, Japan, Taiwan and Korea, and includes both long-established firms and recent start-ups. It contains a wealth of fascinating detail which she elegantly synthesises to support her thesis.' - Mark Casson, University of Reading, UK 'This book is a major contribution to our understanding of international business strategy. It adopts a unique culturist view that has been long neglected by mainstream strategy theorists.' - Geoffrey G. Jones, Harvard Business School, US This timely book investigates the importance of national culture as it applies to the strategic management of multinationals. The author focuses on backward linkage strategies within US, Japanese, Taiwanese and Korean microcomputer multinationals investing in Europe. In particular, both market-driven and resource-driven strategic orientations are depicted in new and established firms.
