At the beginning of the Civil War, Georgia ranked third among the Confederate states in manpower resources, behind only Virginia and Tennessee. With an arms-bearing population somewhere between 120,000 and 130,000 white males between the ages of 16 and 60, this resource became an object of a great struggle between Joseph Brown, governor of Georgia, and Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy. Brown advocated a strong state defense, but as the war dragged on Davis applied more pressure for more soldiers from Georgia. In December 1863, the state's general assembly reorganized the state militia and it became known as Joe Brown's Pets. Civil War historians William Scaife and William Bragg have written not only the first history of the Georgia Militia during the Civil War, but have produced the definitive history of this militia. Using original documents found in the Georgia Department of Archives and History that are too delicate for general public access, Scaife and Bragg were granted special permission to research the material under the guidance of an archivist and conducted under tightly controlled conditions of security and preservation control.

Families, communities, and the nation itself were irretrievably altered by the Civil War and the subsequent societal transformations of the nineteenth century. More than 150 years after its end, we still struggle to understand the full extent of the human toll of the Civil War and the psychological crisis it created. In Aberration of Mind, Diane Miller Sommerville offers the first book-length treatment of suicide in the South during the Civil War era, giving us insight into both white and black communities, Confederate soldiers and their families, as well as the enslaved and newly freed. With a thorough examination of the dynamics of both racial and gendered dimensions of psychological distress, Sommerville reveals how the suffering experienced by Southerners living in a war zone generated trauma that, in extreme cases, led some Southerners to contemplate or act on suicidal thoughts. Sommerville recovers previously hidden stories of individuals exhibiting suicidal activity or aberrant psychological behavior she links to the war and its aftermath. This work adds crucial nuance to our understanding of how personal suffering shaped the way southerners viewed themselves in the Civil War era and underscores the full human costs of war.

Madison, Georgia was a hoppin' place while it hosted three (and later a fourth) Confederate hospitals during the eight months before their final retreat in July 1864. Every few days the train depot was a flurry of activity as surgeons, attendants, and locals unloaded hundreds of sick and wounded soldiers fresh from the battles in Tennessee and North Georgia. Most of the records of their care were saved by the Director of Hospitals of the Army of Tennessee and then ferreted out 140 years later by the author from collections scattered across many states. This book includes verbatim transcriptions of those documents, the subsequent hospital histories, surgeon biographies, and thousands of names in hundreds of regiments.

This book includes two different sections. SECTION ONE is the family ancestry and descendency of Zarobable Gay. The SECTION TWO is the family ancestry and descendency of Simon Gay. Both of these family lines settled in Colquitt County, Georgia Wills, Cemetery Records, Census Records, books, land deeds, military records, church records, etc. were used to write this book. Many hours of labor, were required to complete this data. Library research, microfilm records, reading many books, so much more. A must have item for the GAYRE or GAY family member.

Co. E was part of Symon's Regiment, 1st Regiment, and commanded by Angus Morrison, recently Ordinary of our county. They went by rail from Thomasville to the sand walled artillery fort on the Great Ogeechee, protecting a vital railroad bridge, just upriver, from federal gunboats. Under the higher command of Gen. Lafayette McLaws and the post command of Major Anderson of nearby Lebanon Plantation, they faced Sherman's huge well armed forces who needed to punch through to obtain supplies from the federal fleet. Co. E had 47 men on duty when Sherman's much larger force attacked late on Dec. 13, 1864.
