The X figure is ubiquitous in contemporary culture, but attempts to explain our fixation with X are rare. This book argues that the origins and meanings of X go far beyond alphabets and archetypes to remembered feelings of body movements - movements best typified in the performance of “spread-eagle” as a posture or gesture. These body memories are then projected onto other patterns and dynamics to help us make sense of the world. The argument is accomplished using a blend of insights from linguistic anthropology, cognitive linguistics, rhetoric culture and process semiotics to bring together revealing clues from languages, cultures and thinkers around the world. Chief among the uses and experiences of X are its tendencies to involve us in surprising reversals and blends. In ancient times the X-pattern was discussed as “chiasmus”, a figure which, according to Maurice Merleau-Ponty, informs the most basic elements of our bodily experience, calling into question polarized dichotomies such as subject versus object. Pushed to extremes, presumed opposites like these tend to reverse suddenly. Likewise, blended experiences of our bodily extremities - arms and legs, toes and fingers, hands and feet - provide a plausible source of grounding for unique human abilities like analogy and double-scope conceptual integration. The book illustrates these dynamics by drawing attention to uses of X in history, prehistory and daily life, from sports and advertising to world mythology and languages around the world. The Semiotics of X is the first step towards developing a larger argument on the important but neglected role that chiasmus plays in cognition. It aims to inspire continued exploration on the figure, with the full expectation that chiasmus will become for the 21st century what metaphor became for the 20th century: a revolution in thinking about the way we think.

The last decades have witnessed the development of methods for solving struc tural reliability problems, which emerged from the efforts of numerous re searchers all over the world. For the specific and most common problem of determining the probability of failure of a structural system in which the limit state function g( x) = 0 is only implicitly known, the proposed methods can be grouped into two main categories: • Methods based on the Taylor expansion of the performance function g(x) about the most likely failure point (the design point), which is determined in the solution process. These methods are known as FORM and SORM (First- and Second Order Reliability Methods, respectively). • Monte Carlo methods, which require repeated calls of the numerical (nor mally finite element) solver of the structural model using a random real ization of the basic variable set x each time. In the first category of methods only SORM can be considered of a wide applicability. However, it requires the knowledge of the first and second deriva tives of the performance function, whose calculation in several dimensions either implies a high computational effort when faced with finite difference techniques or special programs when using perturbation techniques, which nevertheless require the use of large matrices in their computations. In or der to simplify this task, use has been proposed of techniques that can be regarded as variants of the Response Surface Method.

Unlike the classical Sturm theorems on the zeros of solutions of second-order ODEs, Sturm's evolution zero set analysis for parabolic PDEs did not attract much attention in the 19th century, and, in fact, it was lost or forgotten for almost a century. Briefly revived by Pólya in the 1930's and rediscovered in part several times since, it was not until the 1980's that the Sturmian argument for PDEs began to penetrate into the theory of parabolic equations and was found to have several fundamental applications. Geometric Sturmian Theory of Nonlinear Parabolic Equations and Applications focuses on geometric aspects of the intersection comparison for nonlinear models creating finite-time singularities. After introducing the original Sturm zero set results for linear parabolic equations and the basic concepts of geometric analysis, the author presents the main concepts and regularity results of the geometric intersection theory (G-theory). Here he considers the general singular equation and presents the geometric notions related to the regularity and interface propagation of solutions. In the general setting, the author describes the main aspects of the ODE-PDE duality, proves existence and nonexistence theorems, establishes uniqueness and optimal Bernstein-type estimates, and derives interface equations, including higher-order equations. The final two chapters explore some special aspects of discontinuous and continuous limit semigroups generated by singular parabolic equations. Much of the information presented here has never before been published in book form. Readable and self-contained, this book forms a unique and outstanding reference on second-order parabolic PDEs used as models for a wide range of physical problems.

At the same time, conservatives claim that their values and communities are vulnerable to attack–often by these same groups.
