Synopsis The Gettysburg Address by : Abraham Lincoln
The complete text of one of the most important speeches in American history, delivered by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. On November 19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln arrived at the battlefield near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to remember not only the grim bloodshed that had just occurred there, but also to remember the American ideals that were being put to the ultimate test by the Civil War. A rousing appeal to the nation’s better angels, The Gettysburg Address remains an inspiring vision of the United States as a country “conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

Synopsis Along the Potomac by : Philip Woodworth Ogilvie
The Potomac River Basin, stretching from Pennsylvania through West Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia, is home to a variety of wildlife and culture. The Potomac flows through the landscape, offering its shores to bathers and fishermen, its rapids to adventurous kayakers, and its natural beauty to all who live nearby. But, over the centuries and specifically since the coming of European settlers to the area 400 years ago, the region and the river have been transformed. Many of the changes that have affected the Potomac were the result of human actions--the introduction of maize about 1,900 years ago, the accidental importation of the Chestnut blight in 1904, and the increased industrialization of the region. In this pictorial history, readers will have the opportunity to learn about the long-lasting effects of deforestation, mining, and pollution, the plant and animal life that call the region home, and the river's restorative power and enduring grace in striking views from the past 200 years.

Synopsis Marching on Washington by : Lucy G. Barber
"Beautifully written. Lucy G. Barber has taken different stories and woven them together so that each builds into a larger narrative about the history of political protest. By looking across a series of marches, Barber explores issues that escape more focused studies, such as the development of marching on Washington as a political strategy, and the changing conception of Washington as a public space. The scope of the research and the author's craft in telling these stories sheds new light on important moments in American history."—Mary L. Dudziak, author of Cold War Civil Rights

Synopsis What You Sow Is a Bare Seed by : Celeste Kennel-Shank
What You Sow Is a Bare Seed is a group biography that tells the stories of ordinary but extraordinary people who were engaged in movements for renewal in the church and justice in broader society. People such as Dora Koundakjian Johnson, an Armenian-Lebanese linguistics scholar and activist, and Doug Huron, an attorney who won a landmark US Supreme Court civil rights case. They were among those who came together as the ecumenical Community of Christ in Washington, DC. Planted in the inner city in 1965—when many churches were leaving—the Community “distinguished itself from the more organized church without rejecting it,” as one former member says. They believed that helping each other identify their gifts was a compelling way to shape their collective ministry beyond themselves. The Community initially intended not to own property but later bought a building and opened it up as a community center. As a final act of ministry, the Community gave its building away to a nonprofit partner when it closed in 2016, leaving a legacy that continues today.
