Synopsis The Art of Asking by : Amanda Palmer

Rock star, crowdfunding pioneer, and TED speaker Amanda Palmer knows all about asking. Performing as a living statue in a wedding dress, she wordlessly asked thousands of passersby for their dollars. When she became a singer, songwriter, and musician, she was not afraid to ask her audience to support her as she surfed the crowd (and slept on their couches while touring). And when she left her record label to strike out on her own, she asked her fans to support her in making an album, leading to the world's most successful music Kickstarter. Even while Amanda is both celebrated and attacked for her fearlessness in asking for help, she finds that there are important things she cannot ask for-as a musician, as a friend, and as a wife. She learns that she isn't alone in this, that so many people are afraid to ask for help, and it paralyzes their lives and relationships. In this groundbreaking book, she explores these barriers in her own life and in the lives of those around her, and discovers the emotional, philosophical, and practical aspects of The Art of Asking. Part manifesto, part revelation, this is the story of an artist struggling with the new rules of exchange in the twenty-first century, both on and off the Internet. The Art of Asking will inspire readers to rethink their own ideas about asking, giving, art, and love.

Synopsis Chinese tourists - what do they want? Facts, ideas and successful examples by : Ingemar Fredriksson

The world has never seen such a huge business opportunity for which they have so little understanding of how to address it. Many entrepreneurs have, more or less seriously, dreamt of being able to sell just one product to every single Chinese. That dream is now quickly turning into a possibility for many hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions. As of 2012. Chinese tourists are the largest group of travellers in the world. Unfortunately, understanding of the needs that these Chinese tourists have is exceptionally poor. What do they want to eat, do or buy? Where do they want to stay, and what places do they want to visit? All these differ radically from the needs of other tourists. In this book, we will take you through what is different and why it is so. In the book, we will also offer ideas on how to easily shift your offering to match what Chinese tourists want. We will also provide plenty of examples on what others have done to attract their business -- since, naturally, many have already invested heavily to do this. So yes, competition for Chinese tourists has undoubtedly begun, but an equally vital investment for winning this fight is understanding. What do you know about their needs? INGEMAR FREDRIKSSON has 30+ years experience in top management, business development, profitability development and marketing. He has worked with plenty of SMEs in different industries (including tourism) and also with Fnatic, IKEA, Invest Sweden, Miss Sweden and the Swedish government. He has also been vice chairman of The Swedish Federation of Business Owners. Since a few years back he lives and works in the UAE. Synopsis Property of the Rebel Librarian by : Allison Varnes

Celebrate the freedom to read with this timely, empowering middle-grade debut in the spirit of The View from Saturday or Frindle. When twelve-year-old June Harper's parents discover what they deem an inappropriate library book, they take strict parenting to a whole new level. And everything June loves about Dogwood Middle School unravels: librarian Ms. Bradshaw is suspended, an author appearance is canceled, the library is gutted, and all books on the premises must have administrative approval. But June can't give up books . . . and she realizes she doesn't have to when she spies a Little Free Library on her walk to school. As the rules become stricter at school and at home, June keeps turning the pages of the banned books that continue to appear in the little library. It's a delicious secret . . . and one she can't keep to herself. June starts a banned book library of her own in an abandoned locker at school. The risks grow alongside her library's popularity, and a movement begins at Dogwood Middle--a movement that, if exposed, could destroy her. But if it's powerful enough, maybe it can save Ms. Bradshaw and all that she represents: the freedom to read. Equal parts fun and empowering, this novel explores censorship, freedom of speech, and activism. For any kid who doesn't believe one person can effect change...and for all the kids who already know they can!

Synopsis Autocrats Can't Always Get What They Want by : Nathan J Brown

Authoritarianism seems to be everywhere in the political world—even the definition of authoritarianism as any form of non-democratic governance has grown very broad. Attempts to explain authoritarian rule as a function of the interests or needs of the ruler or regime can be misleading. Autocrats Can’t Always Get What They Want argues that to understand how authoritarian systems work we need to look not only at the interests and intentions of those at the top, but also at the inner workings of the various parts of the state. Courts, elections, security force structure, and intelligence gathering are seen as structured and geared toward helping maintain the regime. Yet authoritarian regimes do not all operate the same way in the day-to-day and year-to-year tumble of politics. In Autocrats Can’t Always Get What They Want, the authors find that when state bodies form strong institutional patterns and forge links with key allies both inside the state and outside of it, they can define interests and missions that are different from those at the top of the regime. By focusing on three such structures (parliaments, constitutional courts, and official religious institutions), the book shows that the degree of autonomy realized by a particular part of the state rests on how thoroughly it is institutionalized and how strong its links are with constituencies. Instead of viewing authoritarian governance as something that reduces politics to rulers’ whims and opposition movements, the authors show how it operates—and how much what we call “authoritarianism” varies.

Synopsis The Leader They Want by : Scott Comey

There have been many books written on the topic of leadership but none like this one. Scott Comey, author of Are You a Manager or a Leader?, decided to take a different approach with his new book in The Inspired Leader series. What if we were to interview our employees and ask them, what makes a great leader? What if research was done to determine how leaders get better as a result of asking those being led? What if we took some of that advice from their perspective and put the results in an easy-to-read book? You will be surprised at what we discovered. The stories they shared will give you great perspective, and Scott shares some of these in this book for you to grasp a deeper understanding of what they desire in a leader. If you are looking for a different take on getting better as a leader, then this is the book for you. Whether you are a high-level executive, a business owner, or run a small team, you will garnish some golden nuggets that you can implement right away.

Synopsis Givin’ the People What They Want by : Christopher B. Scharping

In 1920, the US government, at the request mostly of a new army of female voters in America, turned off the tap that had served Americans cold beer and liquor. The Volstead Act made the sale of alcohol illegal throughout the forty-eight states. A nation surrounded by water rose up to provide. Liquor came ashore from all directions: the Pacific Coast, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, the Atlantic Coast, and across the Great Lakes from Canada. Our story looks at the smuggling from Canada across Lake Ontario. Since colonial times, liquor had been brought legally and illegally, usually to sidestep the paying of taxes on the products. Now it was brought into the country to provide what the government had tried to take away. The Volstead Act inadvertently created a whole new smuggling system. New terms came into the general vocabulary: Prohibition agent, speakeasy, rum runners (who brought the illegal cargo in by water), and bootleggers (who drove the liquor along the nations roadways). Our story will be mainly focused on the rum runners, although the bootleggers will be represented as well. My grandfather, Charles Frederick Scharping, owned a farm on Lower Lake Road that bordered Lake Ontario. In 1955, my parents built a cottage on the farm at the edge of the lake. The spot where our cottage was located, on Scharping Lane, was the spot where rum runners would bring their illegal cargoes. They sold them to the bootleggers for cash. These rum runners braved over fifty miles of water from the shores of Orleans County to the pickup points along the Canadian shore. The return trips were challenged by weather, hijackers, and the US Coast Guard. Waves up to eight feet tall were common during the frequent storms. Many lost their lives. This Volstead Law lasted for twelve years. It was a bloody time where fortunes were made and lives lost.
