The aim of this monograph is to show the contexts in which ways of life are conducted in late modernity, the dimensions of life in late modernity we can identify and how we can descibe and understand them. The fundamental starting point of the monograph is the thesis that late modernity is characterized, amongst other factors, by large number of life forms and ways of life. The monograph is introduced with a chapter entitled Ways of Life in Late Modernity, in which the author attempts to define the concepts of way of life, lifestyle and life architecture, to outline different theoretical approaches to understanding way of life, and to define some characteristics of late modern ways of life. The monograph is further divided into three parts.

The self becomes a 'reflexive project', sustained through a revisable narrative of self identity. In the thirty years after World War II, American intellectual and artistic life changed as dramatically as did the rest of society. Gone were the rebellious lions of modernism—Joyce, Picasso, Stravinsky—and nearing exhaustion were those who took up their mantle as abstract expressionism gave way to pop art, and the barren formalism associated with the so-called high modernists wilted before the hothouse cultural brew of the 1960s. We live in a time of great uncertainty about the future. Those heady days of the late twentieth century, when the end of the Cold War seemed to be ushering in a new and more optimistic age, now seem like a distant memory. 'Postmodernity' is often claimed as a great transformation in society and culture. But is it? In this book Keith Tester casts a cautious eye on such grandiose claims. Contemporary society has seen an unprecedented rise in both the demand and the desire to be creative, to bring something new into the world. Consuming Football in Late Modern Life explores the phenomenon of football (soccer) fandom as consumption in the age of late modernity. By centralising fandom within the sociology of consumption, the book examines how this phenomenon equates to a fluid series of consumption activities that are practiced in the course of everyday life. In turn, the work departs from much of the existing literature that features exceptional properties of fanatical fans, in order to emphasise the position that seemingly trivial acts of consumption can have a profound influence on the construction, maintenance and evolution of football fandom cultures.
