Synopsis E Mess by : T.E.D. Sullivan

Based on real accounts, E Mess shows a different side of the Vietnam conflict. E Mess is the story of a group of young Marines begrudgingly assigned as cooks in Da Nang, Vietnam who drink, cook, and interact with one another as only Vietnam-era Marines could. The story follows the triumphs and missteps of these men and, in particular, the rise and fall of rookie Dave Woods during the tumultuous years of 1969 and 1970. Dave’s disdain for authority and rules finds him in and out of trouble, but his undaunted loyalty to his friends and his more-than-capable leadership is what makes E Mess the compelling story that it is. As the days drag on, the reader will meet some unusual characters. Some are funny, some are sad, and some are very sad. The reader will also experience real-life situations through the eyes of these men such as the 1969 ammo-dump explosion, the sweep of “the ville” for American deserters, and a “skivvie” run into “the ville” to meet some ladies of the night. E Mess offers comic relief which was very much needed during the conflict, but at times might make the reader want to cry for the poor grunts on the front line. The grunts are never far from the cooks’ minds as they go about their daily routines. This book will make you laugh, cry, and shake your head by some of the decisions made by higher-ranking individuals.

Synopsis Reservation High by : Judith Surber

Although this book is fiction, it is reflective of the horrible plague being faced by many in Indian Country. This book brings to life the daily struggle of those suffering with addiction, as well as the fallout faced by the families and friends of the addicted person. Although a difficult issue, this author has included "Indian humor" to bring light to this subject, which makes it an enjoyable read." Oscar Billings, Vice-Chairman Hoopa Valley Tribal Council This is the debut novel by Pulitzer Prize-featured journalist Judith Surber whose photo-journalism article on the effects of drug addiction on the Native American population of her Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation was featured in The New York Times. Surber wrote this novel in 2015, where she honestly explored the inter-generational effects of substance abuse and recovery in one reservation family. Follow the story of one woman's journey from heroin addiction to a life of sobriety as shared day-to-day with her extended family – her mother, uncle and aunt, two children, cousins and everyone else on the reservation who have experienced the ups and many downs of drug addiction and rehab. And new love, which is a challenge and complication that no one expected. Can love triumph over addiction?

Synopsis On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by : Ocean Vuong

The instant New York Times Bestseller • Nominated for the 2019 National Book Award for Fiction “A lyrical work of self-discovery that’s shockingly intimate and insistently universal…Not so much briefly gorgeous as permanently stunning.” —Ron Charles, The Washington Post Ocean Vuong’s debut novel is a shattering portrait of a family, a first love, and the redemptive power of storytelling On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity. Asking questions central to our American moment, immersed as we are in addiction, violence, and trauma, but undergirded by compassion and tenderness, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is as much about the power of telling one’s own story as it is about the obliterating silence of not being heard. With stunning urgency and grace, Ocean Vuong writes of people caught between disparate worlds, and asks how we heal and rescue one another without forsaking who we are. The question of how to survive, and how to make of it a kind of joy, powers the most important debut novel of many years. Synopsis The Mississippi Boys by : Jane Bennett Gaddy

Summer wheat, heavy with grain, waved in the July wind, and when touched by the afternoon sun, cast a golden glow on the rocks of Cemetery Ridge. Jonathan stood with his countrymen, rifle drawn, wiping sweat from his eyes with the sleeve of a ragged Confederate uniform. Then the nod, Longstreet to Pickett, whose men charged screaming the blood-curdling Rebel yell. Brave soldiers, strength pressed to the breach, fell like autumn leaves. Blood ran freely down the hill. Gettysburg was a trough. Jonathan could see with horrifying clarity from the hillside that Kemper, Armistead, and Semmes were dead. Garnett, already wounded in the leg, gallantly rode his horse in the charge facing certain death, and it was so. Jonathan reached the crest of the hill, slashing Union soldiers with every move, the grotesqueness of the hour searing his consciousness. He took a saber slash through the leg, grabbed the rogue Yank, and pulled him from his horse. With his bowie knife, he put an end to the savagery. But Jonathan was a savage himself. Both countries had gone mad and, in madness, had taken along every southern gentleman.
