Synopsis Violent Men, Violent Couples by : Anson D. Shupe
This book profiles the characteristics and causes of violence between husbands and wives, then describes a systems approach for counselling spouse abusers. The research is based on a sample of 241 known violent men, supplemented with information on 542 others. The analysis considers the men's motives, their social circumstances, their demography, and their feelings about the victims and their own violence. Similar information, obtained from a literature review, is presented for violent wives. Among the causative factors identified are stress, previous learning, and traumatic childhood experiences. The study illuminates the culture of male violence, exploring why violence in active military families is three times as severe as that in civilian families and the fact that religion is an underused resource for addressing the problem. The systems approach to counselling spouse abusers focuses on both persons in a violent relationship and emphasizes multiple causes. The treatment mode is matched to the severity and extent of violence as well as the context in which the violence occurs. (NCJRS, modified).

Synopsis Men's Experiences of Violence in Intimate Relationships by : Marianne Inéz Lien
This open access book draws on a broad study on violence against men, from both male and female partners in Norway, to contribute to the research on intimate partner violence. It identifies similarities in men's experiences and backgrounds, including in their perceptions of their own victimisation. Marianne Inez Lien and Jørgen Lorentzen argue that the traditional gender power model should be modified and supplemented, and propose that we consider violence in terms of psychological supremacy, rather than in terms of femininity and masculinity. Men's Experiences of Violence in Intimate Relationships will appeal to students and scholars across a range of areas including criminology, sociology and family violence, and gender studies.

Synopsis Toxic Couples: The Psychology of Domestic Violence by : Anna Motz
Domestic violence is a major public health concern, affecting millions worldwide. It is underreported, often devastating and sometimes ends in murder. In Toxic Couples: The Psychology of Domestic Violence, Anna Motz integrates psychological and criminological data with clinical illustrations and discussion of current high-profile cases. She examines the complex manifestations and multiple causes of intimate partner violence. Motz disentangles the roles played by those involved and examines the addictive nature of these damaging partnerships. The book describes various forms of abuse, including physical, sexual and emotional, and analyses how intimate partner violence can escalate to murder. She explores important factors including: the role of addiction; homelessness and vulnerability; the intergenerational transmission of abuse; sadomasochistic relationships; honour-based violence. The book emphasizes the significance of female- as well as male-perpetrated violence and outlines the powerful impact on the children of abusive parents, extending the clinical awareness of professionals working with those affected. Toxic Couples: The Psychology of Domestic Violence is ideal for clinicians working with the victims and perpetrators of intimate partner violence, for students of psychology, gender studies and social care courses and for anyone interested in the psychological forces behind violence in relationships. ]

Synopsis Changing Violent Men by : R. Emerson Dobash
Changing Violent Men is based on the evaluation of British criminal justice responses and treatment programs for men who use violence against a woman partner. Court enforced abuser programs are compared with more traditional sanctions such as fines and probation. And qualitative and quantitative data are used to delineate patterns of personal change. This book allows the men and women involved to speak about their lives and the impact of criminal justice interventions upon them.

Synopsis What Causes Men's Violence Against Women? by : Michele Harway
This book uses various theoretical perspectives to summarize what is known about the multiple causes of men's violence against women, and stresses the importance of identifying men's risk factors. The preliminary multivariate model identifies four content areas: macrosocietal; biological; gender role socialization; and relational factors to explain men's violence against women. Within these four content areas the editors develop thirteen preliminary hypotheses about the causes of men's violence against women, which are critiqued by the contributors in the subsequent chapters.
