The Valley of the Queens Project is a collaboration of the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the Getty Conservation Institute from 2006-2011. The project involved comprehensive research, planning and assessment culminating in the development of detailed plans for conservation and management of the site. Volume 2 of the report is the condition summary of the 111 tombs from the 18th,19th, and 20th Dynasties in the Valley of the Queens. This includes a summary of tomb architectural development, the geological and hydrological context, wall painting technique and condition assessment of the paintings and structural stability of the tombs.

Nefertari, the favorite queen of Rameses II, was buried about 3,200 years ago in the most exquisitely decorated tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Queens. Discovered in 1904 by Italian explorer Ernesto Schiaparelli, the tomb had deteriorated to a disastrous extent when emergency consolidation began in 1986. The six-year conservation project of the GCI and the Egyptian Antiquities Organization was completed in 1992. The royal necropolis of New Kingdom Egypt, known as the Valley of the Kings (KV), is one of the most important--and celebrated--archaeological sites in the world. Superior and Queen Valley share a rich history. Superior began with the establishment of Generals Stoneman and Crook's military installation to ward off Apache raids in the 1870s.
