Synopsis Intersections Control and Safety by : Antonio Pratelli
Starting off a new series on Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering the book aims to help bridge the gap between research and practice, encouraging a critical dialogue in different, specific, subjects spanning innovation, development and technology transfer. Those who offer innovation often do not meet the immediate needs of practitioners, especially in the traditional field of civil engineering. Still, the adequate diffusion of research results and wisdom derived from practical experience are crucial to both theoretical underpinnings and technical applications. The papers forming this book are devoted to intersection control and safety and have been selected bearing in mind the criteria stated above. That is, these papers provide both scholarly contribution as well as vision for application. As a general rule, about one-third of all highway crashes happen at intersections. This rule holds for many different countries. Intersection crashes also represent a significant portion of serious injury crashes, and by right are receiving considerable attention from researchers and practitioners alike. This book is therefore devoted to relevant safety aspects of road intersections and innovative features in design and operations that may address the intersection crash problem. The thirteen papers are more or less equally devoted to roundabouts and signals. These papers cover many of the most recent and emerging issues related to intersection control and safety. Topics range from design details to driver perception, from pedestrians behaviour to signal timing, and from capacity models to red-light running. The book will be useful for those wishing to expand their knowledge of this ever important subject area.

Synopsis Planning and Design for Sustainable Urban Mobility by : Un-Habitat
Urban transport systems worldwide are faced by a multitude of challenges. Among the most visible of these are the traffic gridlocks experienced on city roads and highways all over the world. The prescribed solution to transport problems in most cities has thus been to build more infrastructures for cars, with a limited number of cities improving public transport systems in a sustainable manner. However, a number of challenges faced by urban transport systems – such as greenhouse gas emissions, noise and air pollution and road traffic accidents – do not necessarily get solved by the construction of new infrastructure. Planning and Design for Sustainable Urban Mobility argues that the development of sustainable urban transport systems requires a conceptual leap. The purpose of ‘transportation’ and ‘mobility’ is to gain access to destinations, activities, services and goods. Thus, access is the ultimate objective of transportation. As a result, urban planning and design should focus on how to bring people and places together, by creating cities that focus on accessibility, rather than simply increasing the length of urban transport infrastructure or increasing the movement of people or goods. Urban form and the functionality of the city are therefore a major focus of this report, which highlights the importance of integrated land-use and transport planning. This new report of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the world’s leading authority on urban issues, provides some thought-provoking insights and policy recommendations on how to plan and design sustainable urban mobility systems. The Global Report on Human Settlements is the most authoritative and up-to-date global assessment of human settlements conditions and trends. Preceding issues of the report have addressed such topics as Cities in a Globalizing World, The Challenge of Slums, Financing Urban Shelter, Enhancing Urban Safety and Security, Planning Sustainable Cities and Cities and Climate Change.

Synopsis Gridlock by : John C. Sutton
Cities across the world are facing unprecedented challenges in traffic management and transit congestion while coping with growing populations and mobility aspirations; existing policies that aim to tackle congestion and create more sustainable transport futures offer only weak remedies. In Gridlock: Congested Cities, Contested Policies, Unsustainable Mobility, transport consultant John C. Sutton explores how two competing discourses in transport policy and planning practice – convivial and competitive ideologies – lead to contradictory solutions and a gridlock in policy as well as on transport systems. Gridlock examines current transport and mobility in a geographical, social, political-economy and technological context. The challenges of rising congestion are highlighted through case studies from the UK, the USA, and OECD countries. Sutton offers readers a vision of a sustainable mobility future through the concept of mobility management, combining mobile communication and information technology with logistics to match travel demand to the capacity of transport systems. Essential reading for transport professionals and students of transportation planning and policy, Gridlock offers a unique manifesto for sustainable mobility settlement, addressing the pressing problems of growing populations and congestion while looking ahead to a more sustainable future.
