Synopsis Studies in the Book of Revelation by : Steve Moyise
General and scholarly interest in Revelation has never been greater. This is a specially commissioned set of state-of-the-art studies on the most important aspects of Revelation and its significance for the 21st century--by the world's leading scholars. The studies can be grouped in relation to three main themes: strategies of interpretation (theological, literary, feminist, metaphorical); the nature of the violent imagery; and passages of particular interest (the letter to Laodicea, 'praise and politics', Old Testament allusions, the second coming of Christ). This book will provide an invaluable resource for researchers and students alike.

Synopsis Union With Rome, "Is Not the Church of Rome the Babylon of the Apocalypse? by : Christopher Wordsworth
Excerpt from Union With Rome, "Is Not the Church of Rome the Babylon of the Apocalypse?: An Essay Am a time when it is affirmed by some in the Church of England, that there is nothing in our Articles which cannot be explained rightly as not contradicting any thing held dc fide in the Church of Rome; and when proposals are made for an Union of the Church of England with the Church of Rome; it seems not unseasonable to inquire - even for the sake of those who belong to the Church of Rome, or are disposed to join hei' communion - whether any light is shed by Holy Scripture for our guidance in this important matter. If this should be found to be the case, then the question is settled, and all further discussion will be unnecessary for those who believe that all Scrip ture is given by inspiration of God. This is the subject proposed for examination in the following Essay. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis The Fantasy of Reunion by : Mark D. Chapman
This book discusses the different understandings of 'catholicity' that emerged in the interactions between the Church of England and other churches - particularly the Roman Catholic Church and later the Old Catholic Churches - from the early 1830s to the early 1880s. It presents a pre-history of ecumenism, which isolates some of the most distinctive features of the ecclesiological positions of the different churches as these developed through the turmoil of the nineteenth century. It explores the historical imagination of a range of churchmen and theologians, who sought to reconstruct their churches through an encounter with the past whose relevance for the construction of identity in the present went unquestioned. The past was no foreign country but instead provided solutions to the perceived dangers facing the church of the present. Key protagonists are John Henry Newman and Edward Bouverie Pusey, the leaders of the Oxford Movement, as well as a number of other less well-known figures who made their distinctive mark on the relations between the churches. The key event in reshaping the terms of the debates between the churches was the Vatican Council of 1870, which put an end to serious dialogue for a very long period, but which opened up new avenues for the Church of England and other non-Roman European churches including the Orthodox. In the end, however, ecumenism was halted in the 1880s by an increasingly complex European situation and an energetic expansion of the British Empire, which saw the rise of Pan-Anglicanism at the expense of ecumenism.

Synopsis Catholicism Opening to the World and Other Confessions by : Vladimir Latinovic
This volume explores how Catholicism began and continues to open its doors to the wider world and to other confessions in embracing ecumenism, thanks to the vision and legacy of the Second Vatican Council. It explores such themes as the twentieth century context preceding the council; parallels between Vatican II and previous councils; its distinctively pastoral character; the legacy of the council in relation to issues such as church-world dynamics, as well as to ethics, social justice, economic activity. Several chapters discuss the role of women in the church before, during, and since the council. Others discern inculturation in relation to Vatican II. The book also contains a wide and original range of ecumenical considerations of the council, including by and in relation to Free Church, Reformed, Orthodox, and Anglican perspectives. Finally, it considers the Council’s ongoing promise and remaining challenges with regard to ecumenical issues, including a groundbreaking essay on the future of ecumenical dialogue by Cardinal Walter Kasper.

Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Vatican II by : Catherine E. Clifford
The Oxford Handbook of Vatican II is a rich source of information and reflections on many aspects of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), one of the most significant religious events of the twentieth century. The chapters introduce readers to the historical context and outstanding features of the conciliar event, and its principal teachings on Scripture and Tradition, the church, liturgy, religious liberty, ecumenism, interreligious dialogue, church-world relations, and mission. Consideration is given to some neglected aspects of the council, including: the forgotten papal speeches that lay out its fundamental orientation and ought to guide its interpretation; the presence and contributions of women; and the non-reception of the council among Catholic traditionalists. Ecumenical scholars reflect on the significance of Vatican II for the life of other Christian churches and the search for Christian unity; others examine Catholic dialogue with other religious traditions. Surveying the diverse receptions of the council in the perspective of a world church, chapters focusing on Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, Oceania, and Europe reflect on the interpretation and influence of the council and its teaching on the life of the church in diverse cultural contexts. This Handbook will serve as a valuable guide to one of the most important events and bodies of Catholic teaching since the Protestant Reformation and the Council of Trent in the sixteenth century, to the interpretation of the council's teaching, and to its continuing role in guiding the life of the church in the twenty-first century. .
