So geraten auch kontroverse Aspekte im turkisch-deutschen Kontakt in den Blick, denn weder eine Betonung vermeintlich unuberwindbarer Widerspruche noch eine harmonisierende Verdrangung von Konflikten sind zielfuhrend, wenn es um eine Verbesserung der turkisch-deutschen Beziehungen geht.

The contributions to this volume approach the subject of translation from a multitude of perspectives. They thus show how translations are not only closely connected with notions of language, literature, and cultural studies but also reciprocally influence societal and political circumstances as much as they are influenced by these.

Fifty years of Turkish work migration in Germany - that is the subject of this volume. Scientists and scholars from Turkey, Germany, England and the US discuss the influence of these 50 years from their different disciplinary perspectives. In addition to general remarks on the co-existence between people of German and Turkish origin and on migration literature, the volume comprises contributions on Turkish-German re-migrants and transmigrants, on the role of nationality, on economic and historic diplomatic agreements, the transmigrant theatre scene, Turkish-German films, on the current notion of "home" in music and the development of a German-Turkish dialect.

English summary: The proportion of young people in the total population of Turkey is three times as high as in Germany. A quarter of the young people in Germany have an immigrant background. What stories are hidden behind these numbers? How are young people and their concerns represented in the media and in politics? The papers in this volume address the issue of young people in a Turkish-German context in different ways. They take into account the recent protests in Turkey as well as self-representation and representation in young people's use of language, in films, documentaries and books for adolescents, as well as their status with regard to integration policy. German description: Der Anteil Jugendlicher an der Gesamtbevolkerung ist in der Turkei dreimal so hoch wie in Deutschland. Ein Viertel der Jugendlichen in Deutschland hat einen sogenannten Migrationshintergrund. Welche Geschichten verbergen sich hinter diesen Zahlen? Wie werden Jugendliche und ihre Anliegen in Medien und Politik reprasentiert? Die Beitrage in diesem Band beschaftigen sich auf unterschiedliche Weise mit dem Thema Jugend im turkisch-deutschen Kontext. Using Germany as a national case study, this volume examines the historical genesis of precarity, its evolution from 19th-century industrial modernity to the present, and its reflections and reconfigurations in artistic production, in particular with relation to work, gender, and sexuality. “Precarity is everywhere now,” sociologist Pierre Bourdieu declared almost thirty years ago. Not only declining middle-class standards of living, but also debt, drug addiction, housing and food insecurity, depression, and “deaths of despair” are now being recognized as symptoms of the downward pull of social precarity. Although these and similar ills have been attributed to neoliberal policies of deregulation, privatization, and willful neglect of the common good, precarization has accompanied the booms and busts of industrial modernity from its beginnings. Representing Social Precarity in German Literature and Film explores how German and Austrian literature, film, and social history have engaged with social precarity, from the period of Romanticism and early industrialization to the present. The chapters in this volume deal with precarity as both an objective phenomenon reflected in literary and filmic representations and as a subjective phenomenon that gives these representations their particular shape. Representing Social Precarity in German Literature and Film opens new critical perspectives on diverse forms of lived precarity and their creative manifestations by reflecting on the history of capitalist modernity from the vantage points of weakness, vulnerability, marginality, impoverishment, and otherness.

This handbook, the first of its kind, provides a rich overview of the socio-political issues and dynamics impacting Turkey’s diasporic groups and diaspora policymaking. Turkey constitutes an important case study in the field of diaspora studies with a diaspora population of around 6.5 million. This handbook therefore brings together emerging and established scholars to explore the central issues, actors, and processes relating to Turkey’s diasporic groups and diaspora outreach. Theatre of Anger examines contemporary transnational theatre in Berlin through the political scope of anger, and its trajectory from Aristotle all the way to Audre Lorde and bell hooks.

Since the turn of the 21st century, countless literary endeavors by 'new Germans' have entered the spotlight of academic research. Yet 'minority writing', with its distinctive renegotiation of traditional concepts of cultural identity, is far from a recent phenomenon in German literature. A hundred years previously, the intense involvement of German-Jewish intellectuals in cultural and political discourses on Jewish identity put a clear stamp on German modernism. This book is the first to unfold literary parallels between these two riveting periods in German cultural history. Drawing on the philosophical oeuvre of Jean-Luc Nancy, a comparative reading of texts by, amongst others, Beer-Hofmann, Kermani, Özdamar, Roth, Schnitzler, and Zaimoglu examines a variety of literary approaches to the thorny issue of cultural identity, while developing an overarching perspective on the ‘politics of literature’.

To what extent do minority writers feel represented by the literary canon of a nation and its body of "great works"? To what extent do they adhere to, or contest, the supposedly universal values conveyed through those texts and how do they situate their own works within the national tradition? Building on Edward W. Said’s contrapuntal readings and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s reflections on the voice of the subaltern, this monograph examines the ways in which Rafik Schami, Emine Sevgi Özdamar, and Feridun Zaimoglu have re-read, challenged, and adapted the German canon. Similar to other writers in postcolonial contexts, their work on the canon entails an inquiry into history and a negotiation of their relation to the texts and representations that define the "host" nation. Through close analyses of the works of these non-native German authors, the book investigates the intersection between politics, ethics, and aesthetics in their work, focusing on the appropriation and re-evaluation of cultural legacies in German-language literature. Opening up a rich critical dialogue with scholars of German Studies and Postcolonial Theory, Christine Meyer provides a fresh perspective on German-language minority literature since the reunification.
