Synopsis Truth as One and Many by : Michael P. Lynch

What is truth? Michael Lynch defends a bold new answer to this question. Traditional theories of truth hold that truth has only a single uniform nature. All truths are true in the same way. More recent deflationary theories claim that truth has no nature at all; the concept of truth is of no real philosophical importance. In this concise and clearly written book, Lynch argues that we should reject both these extremes and hold that truth is a functional property. To understand truth we must understand what it does, its function in our cognitive economy. Once we understand that, we'll see that this function can be performed in more than one way. And that in turn opens the door to an appealing pluralism: beliefs about the concrete physical world needn't be true in the same way as our thoughts about matters — like morality — where the human stain is deepest.

Synopsis The Nature of Truth, second edition by : Michael P. Lynch

The definitive and essential collection of classic and new essays on analytic theories of truth, revised and updated, with seventeen new chapters. The question "What is truth?" is so philosophical that it can seem rhetorical. Yet truth matters, especially in a "post-truth" society in which lies are tolerated and facts are ignored. If we want to understand why truth matters, we first need to understand what it is. The Nature of Truth offers the definitive collection of classic and contemporary essays on analytic theories of truth. This second edition has been extensively revised and updated, incorporating both historically central readings on truth's nature as well as up-to-the-moment contemporary essays. Seventeen new chapters reflect the current trajectory of research on truth.

Synopsis One Truth, One Law by : Erin Werley

Have you been seeking answers but not really finding them? Have your dreams started to feel like just that-dreams? Has the fear of what other people will think stopped you from being who you want to be and doing what you want to do? Does a fulfilled life feel like something meant for others, not for you?Erin Werley used to feel that way, too. Then, one day, she started to receive "deposits" from her inner voice, which calls itself "I Am." And everything in her life began to change. Most people would call One Truth, One Law: I Am, I Create a "channeled" book, but I Am is adamant that it isn't. As I Am puts it, "Every human is me. Every human can access me. When somebody says they're 'channeling' something outside of themselves, it's because they don't understand that they are God and that we are all one."Written as a series of conversations between I Am and Werley's husband, Phil, the message of One Truth, One Law is simple: Every single one of us is God. We just have a confused filter that thinks we're not God.I Am's intention with this book is not to offer you information that can only come through Werley. It's to teach you how to access your own inner voice so that you'll finally get answers to your questions. So that you'll be able to make your dreams a reality. So that you'll tap into your own God wisdom that no longer worries about what others think. So that you'll know a fulfilled life is something for you and not just other people.Once you really let it soak in that you are God, and you're here to further expand the universe through this physical experience, the limits on your dreams start to fall away.

Synopsis One Way, One Truth, One Life by : Lorne W.P Vanderwoude

With so many doctrines in the Christian world today, finding the truth can be daunting. In this collection of personal meditations on several biblical doctrines, Lorne W.P. Vanderwoude seeks to reveal key themes shared by different doctrines, and in the process heal the church. He challenges readers to study the Bible for themselves and ask the Holy Spirit for direction, and reminds us that there is only one truth, one way, and one life—it comes through one person, Jesus Christ. Jesus can inspire people to grow their own faith rather than live the faith of others. One Way, One Truth, One Life invites readers of Christian and non-Christian faith who have the desire to join in the journey and hear the story of Christ.

Synopsis Truth in Context by : Michael P. Lynch

A Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 1999 Academic debates about pluralism and truth have become increasingly polarized in recent years. One side embraces extreme relativism, deeming any talk of objective truth as philosophically naïve. The opposition, frequently arguing that any sort of relativism leads to nihilism, insists on an objective notion of truth according to which there is only one true story of the world. Both sides agree that there is no middle path. In Truth in Context, Michael Lynch argues that there is a middle path, one where metaphysical pluralism is consistent with a robust realism about truth. Drawing on the work of Hilary Putnam, W.V.O. Quine, and Ludwig Wittgenstein, among others, Lynch develops an original version of metaphysical pluralism, which he calls relativistic Kantianism. He argues that one can take facts and propositions as relative without implying that our ordinary concept of truth is a relative, epistemic, or "soft" concept. The truths may be relative, but our concept of truth need not be.

Synopsis The Metaphysics of Truth by : Douglas Owain Edwards

What is truth? What role does truth play in the connections between language and the world? What is the relationship between truth and being? The Metaphysics of Truth tackles these fundamental philosophical questions and develops a distinctive metaphysical worldview. Moreover, it does so in a climate where the traditionally central issue of the nature of truth has diminished in significance due to the rise of deflationary and primitivist views, which deny that there are interesting and informative things to say about truth. Douglas Edwards responds to these views, and demonstrates the importance of the metaphysics of truth with regard to both the study of truth itself, and metaphysical debates more generally. He also develops a detailed pluralist metaphysical approach, which starts with the diversity of different subject areas, and holds that there are different relationships between language and the world in different areas, or 'domains'. He develops a pluralist approach which explains what domains are; how different domains are individuated; which metaphysical frameworks apply in different domains; and how truth plays a key role in the picture. The picture is extended to incorporate ontological pluralism - the idea that there are different ways of being - which increases the explanatory power of the view. Edwards gives particular attention to important domains which have not yet received a great deal of attention in debates about truth, namely the institutional and social domains, and thus connects work on the metaphysics of truth and being to key issues in social construction.

Synopsis Goddess Power by : Isabella Price

“A fascinating ‘herstory’ of the Divine Feminine, rich in heart, depth and wisdom . . . an empowering message of hope and inspiration.” —Katherine Woodward Thomas, New York Times–bestselling author At the dawn of religion, God was a Woman. The Divine Feminine is known by innumerable names and symbol-rich manifestations across the world’s cultures. Throughout the ages the Goddess has been honored and worshiped as the Virgin Mary, Isis, Inanna, Asherah, Diana, Kuan Yin, Kali, Oshun, Athena, Pele, Sarasvati, Demeter, and White Buffalo Calf Woman, to mention just a few. Goddess Power takes you on a fascinating and, at times, surprising journey into the enduring essence of the Divine Feminine. Inside this book you will learn: • How the Goddess path offers an empowering message and inspiration • The importance of re-establishing a healthy balance and integration of both the “masculine” and the “feminine” archetypes • That the notion of God as archetypal “Sky-Father” is fairly recent in Western culture • Why the wisdom of the Goddess/Sacred Feminine has been ignored, distorted, and oppressed for centuries • How archetypes, mythic narratives, and qualities of Goddesses are alive within you and how they reveal intimate truths about yourself and others • How Goddesses can serve as empowering guides in your personal and professional life • Why especially black Goddesses/dark-skinned Mothers (e.g., Kali or Black Madonna) are a powerful symbol and catalyst for change in our times, both individually and collectively • And much, much more! “An empowering message and inspiration that can be drawn from the Goddess so humanity might evolve toward higher awareness.” —Karen Tate, author of Walking an Ancient Path and Goddess 2.0
