Synopsis Transhumanism: Entering an Era of Bodyhacking and Radical Human Modification by : Emma Tumilty
This book surveys the distinctions that underlie the unbound potential and existential risks of life expansion and radical modifications posed by a transhuman world. Humanness is in flux as human bodies are being hacked and altered in their quest for super wellness, super intelligence and super longevity. Now is the time to discuss how best to think about dealing with bodies that have been hacked to exceed natural physical limits or more technically, species typical functioning. Enter the advent of transhumanism to take uncertainty by the horns. According to transhumanists, death is unnecessary and medical conventions undermine the possibility to radically evolve. To biohackers, there is no need to wait to explore the risks that conventional medicine dares not. This book is of interest to anyone interested in tapping into this growing movement of modifying the human body as it is right now.

Synopsis The Philosophy of Outer Space by : Mirko Daniel Garasic
This volume provides a rigorous philosophical investigation of the rationales, challenges, and promises of the coming Space Age. Over the past decade, space exploration has made significant and accelerating progress, and its potential has attracted growing attention from science, states, businesses, innovators, as well as the media and society more generally. Yet philosophical theorizing concerning the premises, values, meanings, and impacts of space exploration is still in its infancy, and this potentially immense field of study is far from mainstream yet. This book advances outer space philosophy by integrating key scientific and societal debates sparked by recent developments in space research and activities with conceptual, existential, ethical, aesthetic, and political themes and concerns. It maps various regions of philosophical exploration, reflection, and speculation regarding humanity’s present and future emanations into outer space, to promote a broad, rich, and nuanced societal debate regarding this transformative enterprise, which is as stimulating as it can be disorienting. This book will be a fascinating read for academics, researchers, and students interested in philosophy, space studies, science and technology studies, future studies, and sustainability.

Synopsis Feminist Bioethics in Space by : Konrad Szocik
"Feminist bioethics of space exploration is a combination of words that we may look for in vain in the philosophical literature, as well as, more broadly, in the humanities and social sciences. Moreover, the bioethics of space exploration itself is a novel area and to date has only lived to see one monograph (Szocik 2023), while the combination of feminism and space exploration is unprecedented. It is noteworthy that in 2023, monographs began to appear raising feminist issues in the context of space exploration, albeit, with few exceptions (Kendal 2023), not in relation to bioethical issues. One of them is the work of Erika Nesvold (2023), in which the author highlights the enrichment of the discussion of the future of humanity in space with a humanistic element, which, as Nesvold points out, is definitely lacking in the approach of those in the space sector. The purpose of this monograph is to fill this niche in the philosophy and bioethics of space exploration and, more broadly, in humanistic thinking about the future of humans in space. We propose a feminist perspective on potential selected problems in space such as human enhancement, gene editing, and reproduction. But, as we emphasize in the book, feminism is inherently an all-encompassing philosophical approach. Hence, the reader of this book will also encounter considerations that go beyond the scope of bioethics and take us into areas such as the very meaning of carrying out space missions and their potential consequences, as well as the exclusion of numerous groups of people on Earth. Such exclusion and discrimination-not only of women, but also of people of a different skin color, background, social class, or ability than the privileged group, and therefore also of many men-cast a shadow over future space policy, which is unlikely to be one of equality, justice, and inclusion. Although the bioethics of space missions considered from a feminist perspective is the focus of this monograph, it is impossible not to highlight and discuss other related elements that, according to feminist philosophy, cannot but affect the moral evaluation of bioethics in space"--

Synopsis The Gap in God's Country by : Laurie M. Johnson
Laurie M. Johnson argues that America’s culture wars may seem to have erupted in the past couple of decades, but they go back centuries. For those who think that Christian nationalism (or right-wing populism) is the problem to be solved, that some people simply need to understand Christianity or politics better and become reasonable, read on. Christian nationalism and other ideological extremes are symptoms of major economic, technological, spiritual, and psychological shifts that have left too many people uprooted, disenchanted, and precarious. There are no easy answers, but Johnson tries to show a path out that enlists not only individuals, but also church and state. Without leadership and structure provided at the levels of the church and state, Christians, and those impacted by them, will remain part of the problem and not the solution. Johnson says to Christians: change is not talk, it’s action, and Christian action can only happen with leadership that creates a context where we can work together, rather than wasting our time in culture wars.

Synopsis Critical Theories in Dark Tourism by : Nitasha Sharma
This book facilitates a critical investigation of gaps in theorizing and framing dark tourism by navigating through some onto-epistemological issues, theoretical entanglements, future possibilities, and the application of critical theoretical perspectives related to affect and emotions, human-animal studies, postcolonialism, feminism, trauma studies, posthumanism, power and identity. In doing so, it advances the need to connect critical theory, pragmatism and contemporary issues of social and global relevance. "Given the growing body of critical research within tourism studies, dark tourism has somewhat lagged behind. For example, critical tourism researchers have been examining postcolonialism for two decades, but dark tourism research has only sporadically engaged with this topic. Similarly, the issue of gender has been curiously neglected within dark tourism. In addition, dark tourism research has tended to shy away from the ‘big’ challenges facing contemporary societies. Through its engagement with a range of critical theories, this volume not only addresses gaps in the existing dark tourism literature but also moves the debate forward in exciting new directions. This volume is well-placed to demonstrate to other disciplines and fields that dark tourism research can be critical, theoretically grounded, and transformative." – Duncan Light

Synopsis Human Life is Radical Reality by : Howard Nelson Tuttle
The twenty-first century needs a new paradigm for philosophy, because both Anglo-American and Continental philosophy have ended in analytic sterility and deconstructive nihilism. They have ignored the radical reality of human life, which all other realities must presuppose. Three European philosophers in the twentieth century - Dilthey, Heidegger, and Ortega y Gasset - began to develop this idea, but never before has it been systematically conceptualized and adequately expounded. With reference to the works of these philosophers, this book examines the major categories and essential properties of human life as it is lived, for example, in time, circumstance, history, and understanding.

Synopsis Cyber-Humans by : Woodrow Barfield
It is predicted that robots will surpass human intelligence within the next fifty years. The ever increasing speed of advances in technology and neuroscience, coupled with the creation of super computers and enhanced body parts and artificial limbs, is paving the way for a merger of both human and machine. Devices which were once worn on the body are now being implanted into the body, and as a result, a class of true cyborgs, who are displaying a range of skills beyond those of normal humans-beings, are being created. There are cyborgs which can see colour by hearing sound, others have the ability to detect magnetic fields, some are equipped with telephoto lenses to aid their vision or implanted computers to monitor their heart, and some use thought to communicate with a computer or to manipulate a robotic arm. This is not science-fiction, these are developments that are really happening now, and will continue to develop in the future. However, a range of legal and policy questions has arisen alongside this rise of artificial intelligence. Cyber-Humans provides a deep and unique perspective on the technological future of humanity, and describes how law and policy will be particularly relevant in creating a fair and equal society and protecting the liberties of different life forms which will emerge in the 21st century. Dr Woodrow (Woody) Barfield previously headed up the Sensory Engineering Laboratory, holding the position of Industrial and Systems Engineering Professor at the University of Washington. His research revolves around the design and use of wearable computers and augmented reality systems and holds both JD and LLM degrees in intellectual property law and policy. He has published over 350 articles and major presentations in the areas of computer science, engineering and law. He currently lives in Chapel Hill, NC, USA.
