Synopsis Tissue Please! by : Lisa Kopelke

Frog and his friends can’t stop sniffling. What’s worse, they wipe their noses on their arms. Frog’s runny nose is making it hard for him to concentrate in his dance class, and it’s disgusting his teacher, Miss Tutu. What Frog and his friends need are tissues! Frog discovers relief when he finally uses a tissue to blow his nose. But what will happen when Frog is caught in the middle of his dance show with a runny nose – and no tissue? This comedy of bad manners, featuring Lisa Kopelke's humorous text and exuberant art, will have children laughing out loud. And they will discover, like Frog, that a little manners can go a long way.

Synopsis Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation, Second Edition by : Roland N. Pittman

This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Synopsis Principles of Tissue Engineering by : Robert Lanza

Now in its fourth edition, Principles of Tissue Engineering has been the definite resource in the field of tissue engineering for more than a decade. The fourth edition provides an update on this rapidly progressing field, combining the prerequisites for a general understanding of tissue growth and development, the tools and theoretical information needed to design tissues and organs, as well as a presentation by the world's experts of what is currently known about each specific organ system. As in previous editions, this book creates a comprehensive work that strikes a balance among the diversity of subjects that are related to tissue engineering, including biology, chemistry, material science, and engineering, among others, while also emphasizing those research areas that are likely to be of clinical value in the future. This edition includes greatly expanded focus on stem cells, including induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, stem cell niches, and blood components from stem cells. This research has already produced applications in disease modeling, toxicity testing, drug development, and clinical therapies. This up-to-date coverage of stem cell biology and other emerging technologies –such as brain-machine interfaces for controlling bionics and neuroprostheses– is complemented by a series of new and updated chapters on recent clinical experience in applying tissue engineering, as well as a new section on the application of tissue-engineering techniques for food production. The result is a comprehensive textbook that will be useful to students and experts alike. - Includes new chapters on biomaterial-protein interactions, nanocomposite and three-dimensional scaffolds, skin substitutes, spinal cord, vision enhancement, and heart valves - Offers expanded coverage of adult and embryonic stem cells of the cardiovascular, hematopoietic, musculoskeletal, nervous, and other organ systems - Full-color presentation throughout

Synopsis Transplanting Human Tissue by : Stuart J. Youngner

Provides a comprehensive background of the ethical problems in tissue transplantation by explaining the historical development, breadth, and organization of the tissue industry, including the technical develoments that have made it simultaneously clinically relevant and an attractive market for investment capital. Contributions to the book come from an interdisciplinary group of scholars, industry representatives, government regulators, and not neast, families who have donated tissue from their dead loved ones.

Synopsis Real-time Biomechanical Modeling for Intraoperative Soft Tissue Registration by : Suwelack, Stefan

Computer assisted surgery systems intraoperatively support the surgeon by providing information on the location of hidden risk and target structures during surgery. However, soft tissue deformations make intraoperative registration (and thus intraoperative navigation) difficult. In this work, a novel, biomechanics based approach for real-time soft tissue registration from sparse intraoperative sensor data such as stereo endoscopic images is presented to overcome this problem.
