Synopsis 49 by : Samuel H. Kelly

Between these pages are tales of battles told between life and death, love and hate, salvation and sin, philosophy and misanthropy, gluttonous narcotics and narcissistic bulimics. 49 is the debut collection of poetry from the twisted mind of Samuel H. Kelly. From rhythmic rhymes to doggerel dementia, the fine line which separates eloquence and cacophony is broken with Kelly’s style. The eclecticism in his poetry creates a myriad of imagery captured in an anthology of portmanteau titles and psychotic subjects. “A powerful and respected poet and one worth reading over and over again.” —Gary La Buda, author of Eyes of Separation “49 reaches the depths of darkness that most people never venture to and most shadows dare not dwell.” —Melyssa G. Sprott, author, The Dark series

Synopsis Off-White by : Rachel Shabi

Why can't we talk about antisemitism? 'I am so grateful to Rachel Shabi for this supple, generous and original investigation into the uses and abuses of antisemitism... I cannot wait for Off-White to be read, debated and put into practice.' Naomi Klein, author of Doppelganger As claims of antisemitism continue to distort our politics at home and abroad, it has become almost impossible to talk about constructively, even in private. Instead, we find ourselves in a storm of misinformation, political mudslinging and bad-faith accusations. There is, however, a way to deliberate more honestly. Looking beyond our polarising headlines and interrogating the reasons racism takes hold, Off-White offers urgent analysis of one of the most divisive issues of our time. Taking in the contingency of whiteness, Judeo-Christian mythmaking, pro-Israel antisemitism, and the Palestinian struggle against colonialism, Rachel Shabi lights a hopeful way forward. *** 'A masterpiece defined by moral clarity, humanity and insight.' Owen Jones 'An invaluable guide for anyone who seeks to understand issues over which we stumble far too often' George Monbiot 'With a generous spirit and a humane compass, Rachel Shabi guides us through a minefield.' Gary Younge

Synopsis Soundscapes of Liberation by : Celeste Day Moore

In Soundscapes of Liberation, Celeste Day Moore traces the popularization of African American music in postwar France, where it signaled new forms of power and protest. Moore surveys a wide range of musical genres, soundscapes, and media: the US military's wartime records and radio programs; the French record industry's catalogs of blues, jazz, and R&B recordings; the translations of jazz memoirs; a provincial choir specializing in spirituals; and US State Department-produced radio programs that broadcast jazz and gospel across the French empire. In each of these contexts, individual intermediaries such as educators, producers, writers, and radio deejays imbued African American music with new meaning, value, and political power. Their work resonated among diverse Francophone audiences and transformed the lives and labor of many African American musicians, who found financial and personal success as well as discrimination in France. By showing how the popularity of African American music was intertwined with contemporary structures of racism and imperialism, Moore demonstrates this music's centrality to postwar France and the convergence of decolonization, the expanding globalized economy, the Cold War, and worldwide liberation movements.

Synopsis The Devil's Fork by : Bill Wittliff

The Devil’s Fork opens with the boy Papa exclaiming, “They was gonna hang my o’Amigo Calley Pearsall out there in front a’the Alamo down in San Antoneya come Saturday Noon and if I was gonna stop it I better Light a Shuck and Get on with it. And I mean Right Now.” And so Papa and his sweetheart Annie Oster set off to rescue Calley, thereby launching themselves into another series of hair-raising adventures. The Devil’s Fork concludes the enthralling journey through wild and woolly Central Texas in the 1880s that began in The Devil’s Backbone and The Devil’s Sinkhole. Papa springs Calley from jail, but their troubles are far from over. Framed for murder, the two amigos have to flee for their lives. Joining their flight this time is o’Johnny, the evil Sheriff Pugh’s disabled little brother, who has uncanny abilities. Escaping danger for a while, Papa and Calley try to start a new life as horse traders, only to find themselves branded as horse thieves when o’Johnny and a mysterious white ghost horse begin rescuing abused horses from their masters. Can Papa and Calley escape the noose and save all the horses that Johnny and the White Horse liberate? Or will their own hot tempers send them down the Devil’s Fork, from which no one ever returns? Proving himself a master storyteller once again, Bill Wittliff spins a yarn as engrossing as the stories his own Papa told him long ago, stories that inspired The Devil’s Backbone, The Devil’s Sinkhole, and The Devil’s Fork.

Synopsis Billy Bob’s Bible by : Don Claybrook Ph.D.

I am amazed at the unexpected dynamic that took hold once I decided that I would deploy a methodology that would allow events to be seen in the perspective of the Scriptures’ first listeners. I wanted to get another perspective, but never dreamed I would see things that I would never have seen had I been locked-in to my limited perspective, one that I had learned while growing up in a Christian home...one that I had continued to develop in eight straight years of seminary culminating in three advanced degrees. I will be forever thankful that the Lord led me to experiment with a new method for studying Scripture. I am truly blessed. I hope that you will be too. Synopsis Call Me Church by : Tinnean

Church Chetwood, renowned motion picture director, is given an ultimatum by his studio: film a movie with romance or else. Since this is the height of the Depression, and since Church enjoys eating, he reluctantly agrees. He finds a beautiful woman who’s willing to sail on the August Moon to the uncharted island of Iwi Po’o. While there, he makes the discovery of a lifetime, guaranteed to make them all millionaires ... Only it doesn’t exactly turn out like that. The “discovery of a lifetime,” a saber-toothed tiger the press dubs Chetwood’s Kitty, breaks free and runs amok in Manhattan, causing death and mayhem. Months later, Church is facing indictment and a long stretch up the river and has no choice but to lie low until he can get out of town. While nursing his troubles in a saloon, he spots a young man who’s even more down on his luck than Church. Johnny Smith has been on his own since Black Tuesday, four years earlier, and he does what he has to in order to keep body and soul -- what’s left of it -- together, even if it isn’t what he ever expected to do. He enters the saloon, hoping for a little warmth and perhaps a meal. What he finds is Church Chetwood, the director whose documentaries have fascinated him for years. Mr. Chetwood buys him that meal, and Johnny willingly goes with him to his rooming house, ready to do whatever Mr. Chetwood wants, even if Mr. Chetwood claims he isn’t “like that.” Is Johnny’s luck about to take a turn for the better? After all, Mr. Chetwood has a plan to get out of town, and if Johnny’s really lucky, maybe Church will let him come along.
