Synopsis Three Years in a Mad-House by : E. B. Fleming

E. B. Fleming was in a heap of trouble. His business failed. His mind was gone. He had been committed, quite against his will-- incarcerated in the North Texas Hospital for the Insane, at Terrell, Texas. This book is his own true account of what transpired before and after his escape from the lunatic asylum. This book from 1893 will give the modern reader plenteous insights into life in the late 19th century. It gives a perspective on the treatment of the mentally ill from a patient's point of view. It immerses the reader in the racial attitudes of the day. And it depects a style of life in a largely agrarian America that has vanished for all time.

Synopsis The Madhouse by : Daniel Hammarberg

Have you ever grown tired of the constant white-washing of Socialist countries by today's mass media? Well, here's the antidote - a 120,000 word expos on the real contemporary Sweden, fully unmasked in all its vileness. Hear about... ... the five teenagers who have taken their lives the last couple of years as a consequence of being forcibly taken from their families and put into orphanages. ... the families whose children were taken by the government as they attempted to leave the country, and the ex-Communists who want to make the very attempt to do so a crime. ... the social authorities justifying in official documents seizing a woman's new-born child at the maternity hospital. ... the Muslim man who won a discrimination lawsuit after botching a job interview from refusing to shake a woman's hand, and also sued the government after losing welfare payouts from not shaking the hands of the female welfare officer. ... the homosexual man who attempted to sue the municipality after he was prevented from browsing naked personal ads at the library, and about the prisoner who filed a complaint with the government after the warden in charge of him told him to shut up. ... the world's most luxurious prisons and the inmates talking about how joyful their stays were. Swedish inmates get to choose where they want to do their time, and they can afford to be picky. ... the convicted rapist who cost society eleven legal proceedings to keep the porn magazines that had been taken from him, and finishes by suing the government for damages because the prison had kept them from him. ... the military man who while heavily intoxicated shot dead seven people and landed 48 out of 48 fired bullets against running victims, to then be granted furloughs after only a couple of years in prison. ... the male Supreme Court Justice who was convicted of having illegally bought sexual services from a young man and then was able to stay on his post. ... the elite of Swedish society during the 1970's molesting underaged girls who were wards of the state, including two prime ministers as suspects; as well as the society that has only a fine as standard punishment for distributing child porn. ... the physically disabled and immobile immigrant who's got eleven government-paid personal assistants so that he can drink whiskey and smoke cigarettes all day. ... the 79 parliamentary bills that address LGBT rights and cover everything in society, from elder care to foreign aid. "Unfortunately only a fraction of SIDA's the foreign aid agency] budget today goes to LGBT work" from one of the bills. ... how doctors can be sentenced to prison for refusing to perform abortions, and shepherds that risk being attacked by bears can't even get permits for revolvers. ... how citizens can be convicted of cruelty to animals if they don't spend "a couple of hours every day" petting their cat. ... the state TV that held a tribute night to Fidel Castro. "Castro isn't a dictator in the sense the propaganda claims" - actual quote from this evening, on top of repeated programming praising "Che" Guevara. ... the many political dissidents sentenced to prison for the views they've expressed, and learn about what they had to say. ... the young man who already as a teenager was convicted of "hate speech" and who within 12 years would have gone to court no less than 12 times over such charges. ... the country that almost banned publication of the Bible for its stance on homosexuality, and about the Christians sentenced to prison for preaching it. Yes... This is a compilation of stories, facts and anecdotes from what must truly be the most insane country on the planet, with nothing else like it, organized into twelve chapters covering different areas of society.

Synopsis Mercy's Madhouse by : William Byers

One hallmark of a serious religious sensibility is its relationship with the profane world. The challenge for a poet is to make both aspects truly convincing. The poet aims for poems where spirit acknowledges the ripe miseries of the gambling flesh and the flesh sings of spirit's exacting grace. William Byers is such a poet. He knows the world with the eyes of the military man who has stared at nuclear apocalypse and crusted vomit on a bar top and he knows the world with the hungry soul of one who has craved a greater love. His poems are deeply moving as they unsparingly show how we fall and how we sometimes rise, how we stutter and how we find the words that are astonishingly apt. This book is full of many such words in many careful forms. William Byers is a very accomplished American poet. Baron Wormser

Synopsis Mitsui Madhouse by : Herbert Zincke

Herbert Zincke was stationed at Clark Field in the Philippines when Japanese aircraft struck there only ten hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor. His unit had retreated to the island of Mindanao when all American and Filipino soldiers in the Philippines were ordered by their commanders to surrender. Zincke was shipped to Camp No. 2 on Tokyo Bay, where he was a slave laborer until the end of the war. Soon after their arrival at the Kawasaki labor camp, Zincke and his fellow prisoners began to call their barracks, which were owned by the Mitsui Corporation, the Mitsui Madhouse for the brutal treatment meted out by the Japanese guards. During three years at the camp, Zincke faced three life-threatening scenarios. He might survive the malnutrition, disease, and guard brutality, only to be executed with the other POWs if American forces landed in Japan. Ironically, he also faced a threat from American bombers, which endangered Camp No. 2 because it was located in the midst of a heavy industrial area. (Bombs did eventually destroy it.) This work tells the story of Zincke's survival and is drawn from the secret diary he managed to keep out of his Japanese captors' hands. Zincke recollects a terrifying blow from the Japanese camp commander's samurai sword, the diet of rice and thin soup that resulted in drastic weight loss and an inability to do the required factory work, the POW British doctor who attended the prisoners and was frequently beaten because of his constant efforts to keep the sick men from going to work, and many of the other terrible conditions and experiences he endured during three years of imprisonment.

Synopsis Floating Madhouse by : Alexander Fullerton

A gripping historical adventure from the author of the Nicholas Everard naval thrillers. It is the summer of 1904 and Tsar Nicholas II is sending his Baltic fleet – a ragtag bunch of old crooks, untrained, potentially mutinous crews and hopelessly inefficient officers – halfway around the world to reinforce his few remaining ships in the Far East. Here the Japanese fleet under Admiral Togo has been scoring success after success against the Russians. Michael Henderson, a lieutenant caught in a forbidden tryst with the young Princess Natasha Volodnyakova on the eve of her engagement party to another man, is offered the dubious honour of sailing as an observer to Tsushima, where one of the most devastating sea battles in history will be waged. Unable to refuse, Henderson will need all his wits, and a good measure of luck, if he wants to survive... Floating Madhouse is a masterpiece of historic and military detail, ideal for fans of Douglas Reeman and Philip McCutchan.
