Synopsis Dictionary Of British And Irish Botantists And Horticulturalists Including plant collectors, flower painters and garden designers by : Ray Desmond

Over the past four centuries botanists and gardeners in the British Isles have gathered, maintained and propagated many varying species of plants. Their work has been documented in innumerable books and articles which are often difficult to trace. The Dictionary of British and Irish Botanists and Horticulturalists represents a time-saving reference source for those who wish to discover more about the lives and achievements of the horticulturalists listed. The dictionary's utility comes not only from indicating the major publications of the named authors, but also the location of their herbaria and manuscripts.; The previous 1977 edition of the Dictionary has for many years been a much used source of information for botanists, botanic artists and archivists. In this revised edition the scope has been expanded to include among its 13,000 entries flower painters in addition to botanical artists over 1400 entries and, for the first time, garden designers.; Finally the Dictionary should have international appeal since so many botanists and gardeners worked on collective plants overseas, in particular in North America and the British Commonwealth.; Each entry gives, wherever possible, details of dates and places of birth and death, educational qualifications, professional posts, honours and awards, publications, location of plant collections, manuscripts, drawings and portraits. Its main function, however, is to provide further biographical references to books and periodicals. Comprehensive classified indices facilitate access by professions and activities, countries, and plant interests.

Synopsis Irish Watercolours and Drawings by : Anne Crookshank

"Irish Watercolors and Drawings offers a unique chronicle of Irish history. The exquisite watercolors, drawings, and pastels reproduced here capture a broad range of Irish experience, extending beyond picturesque landscapes and pretty colleens to Irish emigrants arriving in America, polar expeditions, Maori encampments, army barracks, horse races, taverns, grand country houses, and the interiors of Irish cabins." "Key Irish artists such as George Barret, Francis Danby, Frederick William Burton, and Jack Yeats, along with many less well known figures, are seen in historical and social contexts. Irish painters abroad - in North America, Australia, New Zealand, India, and elsewhere - are treated in a special section. Artists who visited and were inspired by Ireland are also represented." "The comprehensive text accompanies more than 400 illustrations, among them many unfamiliar works from museums and private collections around the world."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. In 9 volumes, it provides a comprehensive new synthesis of modern scholarship on every aspect of Irish history and prehistory, from the earliest geological and archaeological evidence, through the Middle Ages, down to the present day. Volume VII covers a period of major significance in Ireland's history. It outlines the division of Ireland and the eventual establishment of the Irish Republic. It provides comprehensive coverage of political developments, north and south, as well as offering chapters on the economy, literature in English and Irish, the Irish language, the visual arts, emigration and immigration, and the history of women. The contributors to this volume, all specialists in their field, provide the most comprehensive treatment of these developments of any single-volume survey of twentieth-century Ireland.

Synopsis Irish Botanical Illustrators & Flower Painters by : Patricia Butler

"Botanical illustration and flower painting are perhaps two of the most skilled and captivating forms of expression in the history of art and Irish artists have excelled in these fields. The author presents a general survey of the subject from an Irish standpoint, covering the period from 1729 to the end of the twentieth century and defining the styles and techniques of the individual artists. Considerable original research into both public and private collections has led to fascinating new insights into two hundred years of art history in which flower painters and botanical artists. past and present, have made a unique contribution. Throughout the book the author charts the triumphs, the solid achievements, the successes and failures in a series of concise biographies of over seventy artists ranging from the relatively unknown to the widely acclaimed. There is also a chapter on the work of professional and amateur Irish botanical artists working abroad in Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Jamaica and Burma. A short appendix relates how the original botanical drawing is translated into a variety of attractive print forms. There is currently a great revival of interest in botanical illustration and flower painting and this book is the first to chronicle the extensive and important Irish contribution to the two genres. It makes available for the first time to a wider public the work of Irish botanical illustrators and flower painters." --Publisher description.

Synopsis MPs in Dublin by : E. M. Johnston-Liik

The Irish Parliament met for the first time on June 18, 1264 at Castledermott and for the last time in the Parliament House, Dublin, on August 2, 1800. It had lasted for over 500 years, and from 1707 it was the only parliament in the British Empire with the medieval structure of King (represented by the Lord Lieutenant), Lords and Commons. Like the English/British parliament it only met regularly from the end of the 17th century. In 1692 Ireland had a minimal infrastructure; by 1800 it had become recognisable as the country in whose history and culture there is a continuing and irresistible tide of interest worldwide. Since its publication, "History of the Irish Parliament "has acquired an already legendary status. This companion volume looks at Irish society and the personal concerns which influenced the MPs. This volume will form a valuable reference work in addition and complementary to the "History of the Irish Parliament." The six-volume "History of the Irish Parliament 1692-1800" was published in 2002. The online resource is available at www.historyoftheirishparliament.com.
