The Puranas are not merely history books in the accepted sense of the term but they do give a mine of information about the ancient life or the time when our values were taking roots. Since they record not only history and geography, but also the essence of our jurisprudence and subjects of practical value and its relevance, it perhaps never wanes. In order to help the gen-next know and appreciate the span of our achievement, it is essential for it to have a comprehensive version of our Puranas. The language and style of narration have been kept as near to the modern parlance so as to help the reader get the crux of the text. This Skanda Purana is an important to me of the series as it contains varied descriptions of our ancient heritage. Curiously enough, the now widely popular story: the ‘Satyanarayan Katha’ owes its origin to this very Purana. It is hoped our discerning readers would accord a warm welcome to Skanda Purana as they did to the earlier Puranas of the present series. We would welcome any suggestion from our readers to make the present series more relevant and meaningful.

The World of the Skandapurāṇa explores the historical, religious and literary environment that gave rise to the composition and spread of this early Purana text devoted to Siva. It is argued that the text originated in circles of Pasupata ascetics and laymen, probably in Benares, in the second half of the 6th and first half of he 7th centuries. The book describes the political developments in Northern India after the fall of the Gupta Empire until the successor states which arose after the death of king Harsavardhana of Kanauj in the second half of the 7th century. The work consists of two parts. In the first part the historical environment in which this Purāṇa was composed is described. The second part explores six localities in Northern India that play a prominent role in the text. It is richly illustrated and contains a detailed bibliography and index.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita is now widely recognised as a scriptural text of worldwide importance. Sri Ramanuja is one of the noted commentators on the Vedanta Sutras of Badarayana and the Bhagavad Gita. This has brought him recognition as one of the greatest exponents of Vedanta from the Vaishnava point of view. Swami Adidevananda, one of the distinguished scholarly monks of the Ramakrishna Order who retained his inherent Sri Vaishnava heritage, has translated the original verses and Sri Ramanuja’s commentary into English. This book is of special importance because it is the only English translation now available with the original Sanskrit commentary as well. The book opens with meditation on the Gita followed by the Gitartha-sangraha of Sri Yamunacharya with English translation.
