For Charles Olson, letters were not only a daily means of communication with friends but were at the same time a vehicle for exploratory thought. In fact, many of Olson's finest works, including Projective Verse and the Maximus Poems, were formulated as letters. Olson's letters are important to an understanding of his definition of the postmodern, and through the play of mind exhibited here we recognize him as one of the vital thinkers of the twentieth century. In this volume, edited and annotated by Ralph Maud, we see Olson at the height of his powers and also at his most human. Nearly 200 letters, selected from a known 3,000, demonstrate the wide range of Olson's interests and the depth of his concern for the future. Maud includes letters to friends and loved ones, job and grant applications, letters of recommendation, and Black Mountain College business letters, as well as correspondence illuminating Olson's poetics. As we read through the letters, which span the years from 1931, when Olson was an undergraduate, to his death in 1970, a fascinating portrait of this complex poet and thinker emerges.

Objectivist poet George Oppen (1908–1984), along with his contemporaries Lorine Niedecker, Charles Reznikoff, and Carl Rakoski, provide an important bridge between the vanguard modernist American poets and the later works of poets such as Robert Creeley. In work often compounded by the populist urbanity of city lives, the Objectivists explored the social statements poetry can make. Because Oppen wrote only one essay and one essay-review, his correspondence, in effect, constitutes his essays. Oppen is emerging as one of the major poets of the postwar era; he was the recipient of an American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Award, the PEN/West Rediscovery Award, and a Senior Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. These working papers include a rich correspondence, letters which provide access to the sustained, perceptive body of critical and aesthetic thinking of Oppen’s poetic career. Provocative and witty comments on poetry and poetics, especially interesting for the development of an Objectivist aesthetics, and shrewd, deeply felt assessments about the politics of the twentieth century and its moral dilemmas are some of the issues attended to. This edition offers primary documentation about an influential poetics, a little-known movement, and its active figures. Given the aggressive studies of the politics of canon-formation, the interest in describing a historical context for individual literary achievement, and current debates about mainstream poetry, the rethinking of the Objectivist movement, and the collection of documents contributing to its poetics, is an important achievement in literary scholarship.

This first English-language edition of Federico Garcia Lorca's Selected Letters presents an intimate autobiographical record of the Spanish poet from the age of twenty to a month before his death at the hands of Franco's forces in 1936. "I was born for my friends," Lorca wrote to Melchor Fernández Almagro in 1926, and these letters reveal the personality his friends found so magical. ("A happiness, a brilliance..." Pablo Neruda called him.) Lorca was by turns sympathetic, generous, demanding, whimsical, insecure, and always lyrical. Over the nineteen years covered in this selection, he maintained a correspondence with his closest friends, particularly his childhood companion Melchor Fernández Almagro and his fellow poet Jorge Guillén, and wrote in concentrated bursts to many others. He could be playful with Salvador Dali's younger sister Ana Maria; deferential to composer Manuel de Falla; lively and descriptive with his family; and exasperating to Barcelona critic Sebastian Gasch as he poured out literary plans and solicited favors, ever impassioned but good-natured. With their frequent enclosures of poems and scenes from plays, the letters also chronicle Lorca's growth as an artist, from self-doubting romantic dilettante to confident, internationally respected playwright and poet. Begun at Columbia University under the aegis of Lorca's brother, Francisco Garcia Lorca, the translation and selection of these letters has been made by David Gershator, poet, teacher, and co-founder of the Downtown Poets Co-op. "The American poet Larry Eigner (1927-1996) is the subject of a true renaissance in recent literary scholarship. Until recently, Eigner was relegated to a peripheral place next to the work of his friends and fellow poets Robert Creeley and Charles Olson. Eigner was nonetheless a key figure in the "New American Poetry" that grew from the Black Mountain School and the San Francisco Renaissance, and a major influence on the l-a-n-g-u-a-g-e poets who followed in their footsteps. Eigner suffered from cerebral palsy his entire life, limiting his mobility and his ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, and yet he went on to make a place for himself as one of the most prolific and innovative American poets of the late twentieth century. In 2010, the University of California Press published The Collected Poems of Larry Eigner in a four-volume set that runs to 1,868 pages, meant principally for libraries and collectors. In 2016, the University of Alabama Press published Calligraphy Typewriters: The Selected Poems of Larry Eigner, a more affordable paperback of the poet's most significant work, meant for a popular readership and the classroom. Other volumes have followed, among them Momentous Inconclusions: The Life and Work of Larry Eigner (University of New Mexico Press, 2021), a gathering of critical appreciations of Eigner's work and legacy, and George Hart's Finding the Weight of Things: Larry Eigner's Ecrippoetics (forthcoming, University of Alabama Press, 2022). While each of these volumes makes available either Eigner's poetry or critical studies of his work, none of them have ever presented a comprehensive biography of the poet, other than the biographical context necessary for the framing of each volume. Jennifer Bartlett's The Sustaining Air will be the first single-volume biographical account of Eigner's life. Bartlett-a poet, teacher, and life-long disability advocate who herself lives with cerebral palsy-covers every significant phase of Eigner's life: his childhood and young adulthood in Swampscott, Massachusetts, where he began typing poems with one finger on the manual typewriter that was a bar mitzvah gift; his first publications and the maturation of his poetic interests through correspondence with many noteworthy poets of the era; how he and his family contended with his disability both before and after his move to Berkeley, California, and the ever-expanding circle of friends, poets, caretakers, and collaborators that he established there. The result is a deft, incisive, and inspiring account of a singular figure and voice in postwar American poetry"--

A selection of innovative poems by the groundbreaking Pulitzer Prize winner.

This selection from the Cantos was made by Ezra Pound himself in 1965. It is intended to "indicate main elements" in the long poem -- his personal epic -- with which he was engaged for more than fifty years. His choice includes, of course, a number of the Cantos most admired by critics and anthologists, such as Canto XIII ("Kung [Confucius] walked by the dynastic temple..."), Canto XLV ("With usura hath no man a house of good stone...") and the passage from The Pisan Cantos (LXXXI) beginning "What thou lovest well remains / the rest is dross," and so the book is an ideal introduction for newcomers to the great work. But it has, too, particular interest for the already initiated reader and the specialist, in its revelation, through Pound's own selection of "main elements," of the relative importance which he himself placed on various motifs as they figure in the architecture of the whole poem.
