Manny's starting his first football season with the Hudson City Hornets, and he's determined to get in the game and not warm the bench. Problem is, Manny's not a big guy, and when he tries to tackle the offense, he's the one who ends up on the ground. Coach isn't too pleased, especially when the team starts losing. But Manny refuses to give up; he's as tough as anyone out there and he's fast. He's got the season to prove to Coach, his teammates, and himself that he has the talent to earn the roar of the crowd.

So many things are at work in our relationship with sport. Partisanship at the most visceral level, amazement at the display of the human body operating at the extremes of power, speed and strength, appreciation of grace, cunning, timing, spatial awareness, drama, forethought. Decades of rivalry are balanced by moments of sweet skill. This major new anthology of great sports writing captures the drama, the moments of speed and strength, as portrayed by great writers about many sports across the centuries. Stories and excerpts include Doris Lessing's "Through the Tunnel," Enid Bagnold's National Velvet, CLR James's A Majestic Innings, Ring Lardner's "The Champion," Nick Hornby's "Fever Pitch," Garrison Keillor's "Attitude," Joyce Carol Oates's On Boxing, Ernest Hemingway's Islands in the Stream, P.G. Wodehouse's The Heart of a Goof, and Homer's The Iliad.

"ROAR is for everyone who is thinking about where they are in life-and those who want more out of life. From author Michael Clinton, former president and publishing director of Hearst Magazines, ROAR helps both those considering retirement and those who have no wish to retire get on with fulfilling their dreams-before it's too late. We are living in a time when everyone is constantly reassessing what is next for them. In the mid-career group, people who have spent years working in a business are now seeing their industry changing dramatically and are facing the question: "What does that mean for me in the next twenty years?" At the same time, the post-career group is also going through massive change. Many in this group are still not prepared financially, logistically, or emotionally to make the decisions necessary to face the next phase of their lives. While they may be thinking about retiring, they don't necessarily want to do nothing. ROAR will help both groups think about what is really important to them, and how to plan and take meaningful action so that the second half of their lives can be happy and productive. The book offers a unique and dynamic 4-part process called ROAR: Reimagine yourself, Own who you are, Act on what's next, and Reassess your relationships. This is the method Michael uses himself to pursue a purposeful life-and now he shares his technique and approach so you can expand your own life too. Prescriptive and inspiring, with personal anecdotes from his life as well as from others he interviewed for the book, ROAR is highly accessible, entertaining, and transformative"--

The date is April 29, 2015. Baltimore is reeling from the devastating riots sparked by the death in police custody of twenty-five-year-old African American Freddie Gray. Set against this grim backdrop, less than thirty-six hours after the worst rioting Baltimore has seen since the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968, the Baltimore Orioles and the Chicago White Sox take the field at Camden Yards. It is a surreal event they will never forget: the only Major League game until COVID ever played without fans. The eerily quiet stadium is on lockdown for public safety and because police are needed elsewhere to keep the tense city from exploding anew. When the Crowd Didn't Roar chronicles this unsettling contest--as well as the tragic events that led up to it and the therapeutic effect the game had on a troubled city. The story comes vividly to life through the eyes of city leaders, activists, police officials, and the media that covered the tumultuous unrest on the streets of Baltimore, as well as the ballplayers, umpires, managers, and front-office personnel of the teams that played in this singular game, and the fans who watched it from behind locked gates. In its own way, amid the uprising and great turmoil, baseball stopped to reflect on the fact that something different was happening in Baltimore and responded to it in an unprecedented way, making this the unlikeliest and strangest game ever played.

Sex, smoking, and social stratification are three very different social phenomena. And yet, argues sociologist Randall Collins, they and much else in our social lives are driven by a common force: interaction rituals. Interaction Ritual Chains is a major work of sociological theory that attempts to develop a "radical microsociology." It proposes that successful rituals create symbols of group membership and pump up individuals with emotional energy, while failed rituals drain emotional energy. Each person flows from situation to situation, drawn to those interactions where their cultural capital gives them the best emotional energy payoff. Thinking, too, can be explained by the internalization of conversations within the flow of situations; individual selves are thoroughly and continually social, constructed from the outside in. The first half of Interaction Ritual Chains is based on the classic analyses of Durkheim, Mead, and Goffman and draws on micro-sociological research on conversation, bodily rhythms, emotions, and intellectual creativity. The second half discusses how such activities as sex, smoking, and social stratification are shaped by interaction ritual chains. For example, the book addresses the emotional and symbolic nature of sexual exchanges of all sorts--from hand-holding to masturbation to sexual relationships with prostitutes--while describing the interaction rituals they involve. This book will appeal not only to psychologists, sociologists, and anthropologists, but to those in fields as diverse as human sexuality, religious studies, and literary theory.

Every boy has dreams of the man he will become--exploring the world, fighting the enemy, and being dangerous for good. He imagines himself as the hero, the expert, the one others look up to. Then somewhere along the way, the lies of the enemy knock him down, his dreams are shattered, and he loses purpose as the enemy attempts to rob him of his true identity. In this hard-hitting book, world-class hunter, adventurer, and popular speaker Brent Henderson takes men on a journey to some of the most dangerous and deadly places on earth. Along the way, he helps each man discover that the most powerful force in the universe can be found in his spirit, where God resides. He shows men how to recover what's been lost by answering their biggest questions: Who am I really? Where does my value come from? and Am I enough? The perfect gift for Father's Day, The Roar Within will set men free and equip them to live lives of purpose, courage, and confidence.

With The Silence and the Roar, Nihad Sirees writes a powerful, life-affirming and Kafkaesque novel about a censored writer trying to live a normal life under a Middle Eastern dictatorship, Syria. Fathi, a writer no longer permitted to write, makes his way through a city churned by parades for an unnamed dictator. It is a day stifled by heat and the noise of the chants, a day of people trampled, and of the brutality and bullying of the party faithful. But Fathi presses treacherously against the crowd, attempting just to visit his mother and his girlfriend. The Silence and the Roar (Al Samt wa Al Sakhab) is a personal, urgent, funny and aggrieved novel. It asks what it means to have a conscience, or to laugh, or to endure in a time of the violence, strangeness and roar of tyranny. It is both a true literary achievement and an act of real courage by a brilliant Syrian writer. Nihad Sirees' The Silence and the Roar (Al Samt wa Al Sakhab) is translated from the Arabic by Max Weiss and published by Pushkin Press

Holy Roar is for: Readers of all ages interested in growing their faith Pastors, worship leaders, and small group teachers leading believers In the ancient world, something extraordinary happened when God's people gathered to worship Him. It was more than just singing; it was a declaration, a proclamation, a time to fully embody praise to God for who He is and what He has done. In fact, in the Psalms, seven Hebrew words are translated into the English word praise, each of which represents a different aspect of what it means to truly praise God.
