Synopsis Property Rights (Routledge Revivals) by : Lawrence C. Becker

Property Rights: Philosophic Foundations, first published in 1977, comprehensively examines the general justifications for systems of private property rights, and discusses with great clarity the major arguments as to the rights and responsibilities of property ownership. In particular, the arguments that hold that there are natural rights derived from first occupancy, labour, utility, liberty and virtue are considered, as are the standard anti-property arguments based on disutility, virtue and inequality, and the belief that justice in distribution must take precedence over private ownership. Lawrence Becker goes on to contend that there are four sound lines of argument for private property that, together with what is sound in the anti-property arguments, must be co-ordinated to form the foundations of a new theory. He therefore expounds a concise but sophisticated theory of property that is relevant to the modern world, and concludes by indicating some of the implications of his theory.

Synopsis Law and Justice in Japanese Popular Culture by : Ashley Pearson

In a world of globalised media, Japanese popular culture has become a signifi cant fountainhead for images, narrative, artefacts, and identity. From Pikachu, to instantly identifi able manga memes, to the darkness of adult anime, and the hyper- consumerism of product tie- ins, Japan has bequeathed to a globalised world a rich variety of ways to imagine, communicate, and interrogate tradition and change, the self, and the technological future. Within these foci, questions of law have often not been far from the surface: the crime and justice of Astro Boy; the property and contract of Pokémon; the ecological justice of Nausicaä; Shinto’s focus on order and balance; and the anxieties of origins in J- horror. This volume brings together a range of global scholars to refl ect on and critically engage with the place of law and justice in Japan’s popular cultural legacy. It explores not only the global impact of this legacy, but what the images, games, narratives, and artefacts that comprise it reveal about law, humanity, justice, and authority in the twenty-first century.

Synopsis Property by : Thomas W. Merrill

This revised casebook is designed for a "building block" property course that serves as a student's foundation for the rest of law school and beyond. Avoiding the typical hodge-podge of issues, the book presents material in an integrated way, starting with the central role of exclusive in rem rights in property, and systematically developing elaborations, exceptions, and counterfoils to this idea using vivid cases, both old and new. Timely issues in intellectual property, mortgages, and regulatory takings, as well as traditional topics like equity and restitution, are given expansive treatment. The emphasis throughout is on fundamental principles and policy questions.
